@therese_my @edrcook And this is what our Nature paper does: generates new insights, quantified, with super detailed methodology, all code, data, methods in the public domain via open science. And we fight for disclosure and transparency -we need reliable data: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

@CostasVelis @edrcook Agree. Numbers are important, which is why increased transparency and tracebility are key to include under the plastics treaty since todays numbers are very limited.

A recent paper on plastic emissions assumes that waste trade is negligible, because it only looks at one category of plastic waste trade. apnews.com/article/plasti… I have thoughts. (Spoiler: that assumption and the underlying data is inaccurate)

@edrcook @therese_my As I mentioned before, I do invite you to consider the evidence together. Ultimately, we need quantifiable evidence - numbers!!

@therese_my We didn’t exclude for those reasons - it’s because the model is municipal scale & export data are national - we would have had to ‘allocate’ mass exported to municipalities but we don’t know where it goes - as the mass is small we left it out to avoid more error.

@therese_my 2. Plastic / waste transboundary movement phenomena are complex. We have been studying them for over a decade. Would be great have better estimates for all flows and fates of imports. I invite anyone interested to jointly look at the evidence.

@therese_my 1. As academics we are open to any criticism - I have personally alerted the world to the unsustainable plastic exports - and fought for it. As a result the EC plastics strategy and regulations changed - so totally paradoxical to be accused of waste colonialism bias…

@andersen_inger thanks for your leadership - not just making the case - citing numbers of our model on informal waste workers’ contribution to plastics recycling! We need a science-based approach @ScientistsCoa @LeedsUniEng @UniversityLeeds @edrcook @Joshcottom #INC4 #PlasticPollution
Inger Andersen@andersen_inger

Today, 20 million waste pickers across the world collect 60% of all our plastic waste. They are the unsung heroes helping to keep our communities clean, protect nature & provide jobs. A pleasure to see @globalrec_org again & hear their perspectives on what #INC4 must deliver.

Great to engage with civil society stakeholders to #PlasticsINC. We are in a race against time to negotiate and finalise an ambitious global agreement to #BeatPlasticPollution. Strong civil society engagement is vital to elevate ambition & deliver a just transition for all.

Very powerful opening address to #INC2 from ⁦@UNEP⁩ ⁦@andersen_inger⁩ on what is needed for a future without the blight of plastic pollution, clear messages to eliminate unnecessary plastics, and to focus on upstream solutions

Honoured to address #INC2 50+ nations, translation to 6 languages, but only 5 mins to summarise decades of science on the harm current plastics use brings & point towards upstream solutions. Key message - to avoid unintended consequences, science will be critical to guide the way

Sitting on an Indonesian ferry thinking about plastic pollution. What can be collected? What, given its format and composition, must be simply designed out?

Delighted & honoured to receive this international award for our collaborative work highlighting the global environmental challenge posed by plastic & microplastic pollution. Robust scientific evidence will be even more critical, as we move problem identification to solutions!

@KathyWillis_ @CostasVelis Would be great to see how this can be done for lower value materials not currently attractive to informal sector. In Indonesia PET has lots of value and is widely collected, flexibles are the real challenge.
