Interested in #Indonesia, the death (and rebirth?) of colonialism, or even the joys and frustrations of translation, join us at the @britishlibrary on Monday. It promises to be a lively evening.

@NewForestRamble Thanks for your work here. My grandfather was a navigator on a bomber in the Free French airforce, killed when his plane crashed into St Catherine's Hill on on approach to Hurn airport in 1943. Not quite New Forest but almost...

As a post script. The men who died at this site were in effect refugees. I've become friends with two men who live in England and Wales: they are the sons of men from this very squadron who made such huge sacrifices. I don't need to say much more than that.

The men were not British. They were from a foreign land, but they came to England to sign up and take the fight back to enemy who invaded their own country.

@JoshEdwardsFilm Really. I've been fortunate enough to be around in the UK for it. So glad a corner has been turned after madness of the last 14 years.

I was a little emotional yesterday morning, tuning in to the radio listening halfway across the world. It surprised me. Relief.

"Down this road the soldiers came." 80 years ago tomorrow, on 10 June 1944, four days after D-Day, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed. 643 civilians, including non-combatant men, women, and children, were massacred by a company of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich. The Germans murdered everyone they found in the village at the time, as well as people brought in from the surrounding area. Women and children were herded into a church that was set on fire; the memorable begininning of the #WorldatWar TV series.

Here we go again. The Suwung landfill in Bali's south caught fire again on Wednesday, and it took the Denpasar City Fire Brigade five hours to extinguish it. It was "thought to be caused by piles of rubbish and hot weather which caused sparks". 🙄 #google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nusabali.com/berita/166816/…

@raygeorgeson There is a kind of poetry though that failures from policy decisions largely made by previous Oxbridge students lead to the current cohort having to swim in the resulting 💩.

I’ve never been much of a fan of the tedious symbol of elite privilege that is the #BoatRace where the two same teams get to the final every year… but they don’t deserve to be rowing in poo & getting eColi illnesses. What a state 💩

On Friday my lovely Dad passed away peacefully at home in York. 4 days shy of his 101st birthday he had an amazing life. Here is one of my favourites photos of him from nearly 20 years ago. Love you, Dad.

@YounieTyler My hypothesis is that the data on waste management in China is simply outdated. Even ten-year-old data could be completely wrong considering its rapid modernization. But let's first see what the data says!

Something weird is going on. On the one hand, every study on plastic emissions ranks China as being near or at the top of biggest polluters. Yet, when browsing through hundreds of photos of Chinese rivers, I struggle to find any that contain visible plastic pollution. Anecdotally, people also tell me that Chinese coastal cities are extremely clean. Unfortunately, we are not aware of any published data on larger plastic objects in Chinese rivers. In case you visit China or know people living in China, we'd love your help in collecting data through our Citizen Science App! theoceancleanup.com/research/citiz…
