Alabama State Board of Education announced its intent to adopt a new “Literacy Coursework: Science of Reading” code that would ban three-cueing in schools. excelinedinaction.org/2024/01/17/ala… @GovernorKayIvey

It was a pleasure to host Alabama’s Certified Academic Language Therapists to the Governor’s Mansion this afternoon. These professionals work tirelessly to change our students’ lives for the better, enhancing literacy and communication — I couldn’t commend them more! #alpolitics

The #ALBOE work session has resumed. First up is a discussion of the change in terminology in the Alabama Accountability Act. The term "failing school" is now called a "priority school." And priority status will be given to schools that earn a 'D' or an 'F' on the report card.

To ensure every child has the best opportunity to learn to read, states can consider requiring schools to screen all students for the characteristics of dyslexia. @Sonyayates explains how: excelined.org/2023/05/25/dys…

I can personally attest to this. We pulled our child from an "A" Massachusetts public school after 3rd grade, because she could not read at grade level proficiently (grade level is a low expectation). #FAPEdenied We were privileged to be able to sacrifice lifelong savings to enroll her in a Science of Reading #OrtonGillingham-based private school, and transport here each day, each way. It took two entire school years (i.e., 4th and 5th grade) of intensive 1:1 daily lessons to remediate the academic harm caused by Balanced Literacy (e.g., @LucyCalkins Units of Study, 3-cueing). #readingcrisis Tell me happens to the children (and their families) that cannot afford the financial burden of private tutoring &/or private school tuition &/or private transportation. “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence and crime is welded to reading failure.” ~U.S. Department of Justice #LiteracyIsEquity in education. NO ONE will EVER convince me otherwise.
