🏁On this day in 1986: Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto were killed in a fiery accident on the Tour De Corse. This footage, showing crew and car before and after the crash (or sadly, what´s left of it, from 00m26s onwards...), really shows the degree of destruction. 19th of February 1953 - 2nd of May 1985 41 Years Ago 🙏🏻 🇫🇷 1985 Tour de Corse - Rallye de France Car 4 SS4 Palneca - Abbazia 1 30.6km Attilio Bettega and Maurizio Perissinot - Lancia 037 Rally On May 2, 1985, during the fourth stage of the rally (Zérubia-Santa Giulia), Bettega lost control of his Lancia Rally 037. The car slid off the road and struck a tree on the driver's side killing Bettega instantly. The impact was particularly devastating because the Lancia 037, while incredibly fast, had a lightweight chassis that offered minimal side-impact protection. The tree effectively split the cockpit. Lancia retired its works team from the remainder of the event as a mark of respect. The accident raised immediate questions about the safety of the ultra-lightweight, high-horsepower Group B cars. ⚠️ ⚠️ The Accident Footage ⚠️ ⚠️ 40 Years Ago 🙏🏻💔🥹 🇫🇷 1986 Tour de Corse - Rallye de France Car 4 🇫🇮 Henri Toivonen and 🇺🇸 Sergio Cresto - Lancia Delta S4 SS18 Corte - Taverna On May 2, 1986, during the 18th stage of the rally (Corte–Taverna), Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto in their Lancia Delta S4 entered a tight left-hand corner with no guardrail. The car plunged down a steep ravine and crashed onto its roof. The impact caused the fuel tank—which was unprotected beneath the seats—to rupture. The car exploded into flames almost instantly. Due to the remote location and the intensity of the fire, marshals and spectators were unable to reach the crew. Both Toivonen and Cresto died at the scene. It was exactly a year after Lancia and the WRC lost Attilio Bettega in the same event. Sergio Cresto had been Attilio Bettega co-driver as well before 1985.
