The Jets drafted Kansas State safety VJ Payne with their last pick, No. 228 overall. @dpbrugler had him graded as a fourth/fifth rounder, so that's a good value. Payne is big (6-3, 206), with long arms and he's a good athlete too: 4.4 40, 6.94 three-cone). Had four pass deflections and one interception last season. He played free safety, strong safety and big nickel at Kansas State. He's "at his best", per Dane, covering tight ends — which the Jets have struggled with in recent years. He's a seventh-round pick so nothing guaranteed, but solid value grab by the Jets.
