"There's never anybody walking around in downtown St. Louis. Remember the old neutron bomb that wouldn't knock down buildings but just would eliminate all the people? It's like one of those hit St. Louis" – Gary Cohen

I've been in these broadcast booths and had this exact conversation with multiple Major League announcers. One of the immediate follow-up questions to "What happened to Downtown STL" is: “Why do you have two downtowns? Three?” They’re talking about Clayton. Sometimes Brentwood. Sometimes St. Charles. But the question underneath it is the same: How did one city end up so divided against itself? The story of the Broken Heart of America is one of intentional division. This city didn’t break; it was broken. By people who benefit from a divided city. By politicians and well-connected insiders who redlined it, abandoned it, carved it up—encouraging white flight, funding gentrification, and locking in segregation that still defines St. Louis today. But you know what else they say about our city? They talk about our food. They talk about our history. They talk about how people show up from across the metro region and from across state lines. And they talk about how this city just keeps pushing through. Game 6 in 2011. The Blues in 2019. A city that keeps producing some of the best talent in the country. At the end of the day, we’re still here, mending what they broke and building something better in its place. . Because it’s always been St. Louis vs. everybody.

Everyone is probably at the zoo, art museum, or strolling Tower Grove Park — all of which are free. Or, in line at Pappy’s, maybe the Gramophone. I mean … have you tried the sandwiches there?!!!

"Candidates are brands who are also people, and that brand's story had to be consistent. That requires a good person at the center of it." @amandalitman is spot on.
Amanda Litman@amandalitman

I talked with @kylewilsontharp about my frustrations with the Democratic Party & how people complain about “messaging” or “ads” or “consultants” bc they don’t realize that “candidate” is a thing you can change (if you work downstream enough).

It’s been a long journey, and I’m so excited to meet my son this May. 🍼 I hope my story encourages more women to open up about their experiences with fertility treatments. There should be no stigma around wanting to start a family. I’m committed to building a St. Louis that supports and uplifts the next generation—for my son and for families across the City. stlmag.com/family/st-loui…

Interesting to see the FCC chairman invoking the term “monopolize” from the Supreme Court’s broadcast public interest doctrine. That doctrine historically justified limits on media monopolies and ownership concentration, which are rules the FCC is now considering loosening.
Brendan Carr@BrendanCarrFCC

Constitutional law 101: “No one has a First Amendment right to a license or to monopolize a radio frequency; to deny a station license because ‘the public interest’ requires it ‘is not a denial of free speech.’” Supreme Court in Red Lion quoting NBC v. United States, 319 U. S. 227 (1943).

Pete Hegseth can spend nearly $2 billion a day bombing Iran and millions of taxpayer dollars on lobster dinners, but $25 to shine a light on the American flag? Apparently that’s where he draws the line.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth@SecWar

Professional Military Education should produce warfighters and leaders—not wokesters. That’s why we are establishing a Task Force to evaluate our Senior Service Colleges and ensure the focus is where it belongs. No distractions. Just warfighting.

Republicans gerrymandered an entire damn state to try to anoint Brattin as the next Congressman for #MO05. Days into his campaign — with endorsements from Rep. Bob Onder & Rep. Mark Alford — and he’s already picking a fight with the family of a fallen firefighter. That’s who the GOP wants to send to Congress.
Senate Democrats@MoSenDems

Sen. Rick Brattin (R) just asked Sen. Nurrenbern (D) to “play ball” and trade her bill to honor a fallen firefighter for the GOP bill to raise sales taxes.
