2023. Pete Buttigieg argues that preventing Spirit Airlines from merging with JetBlue will increase competition and help Spirit Airlines succeed in the future. Buttigieg spoke about the need to "police the trend toward consolidation." Apparently Buttigieg couldn't comprehend how some mergers can actually increase competition. There was no upside to blocking a small, struggling airline from merging with JetBlue (only 5% of the U.S domestic market).
