it’s gonna be sad to say goodbye to this era because years from now, i feel like people will realize it was heavily underrated and didn’t fully take it in while it was here. even down to the production and stage build of this set.

ALABAMA ICE STORM HISTORY: With potential for a big freezing rain/ice event this weekend, it is interesting to note our last major ice storm in the state was February 1-2, 1996. Up to one inch of ice accumulated on trees, power lines, and roads. But the grandaddy of them all was the ice storm of January 1982. After a period of very cold weather (Birmingham dropped to -1F on Jan 11), a winter storm brought freezing rain to the state on January 12, 1982. The precipitation arrived about 8 hours earlier than anticipated in the Birmingham area; the freezing rain quickly turned roads into skating rinks. Thousands of motorists had to abandon their vehicles on roads and hike home or spend the night in shelters. Brookwood Village mall became a huge shelter. So many wrecks occurred that the Birmingham Police Department could not answer the calls for accident investigation. As temperatures hovered near the freezing mark through the night, freezing rain created a thick coating on all exposed objects. Trees snapped, pulling down power lines and putting as many as 750,000 Alabamians in the dark. A state of emergency was declared in Alabama and National Guard Armories were opened to serve as shelters. Some people had no power for weeks, timber damage in the state was extensive. Twenty Alabamians were dead and another 300 injured and damage totaled $78 million because of the 1982 winter storm. THIS WEEKEND: So, will the weekend winter storm be in the same league as 1982? Too early to know. One positive is that temperatures will be in the 50s Wednesday through Friday, and the infrastructure won't be nearly as cold as '82 at the onset. But models tonight continue to advertise potential for significant ice accumulation over the northern half of Alabama this weekend. I will have a new video briefing here early tomorrow morning. Stay tuned.

WEEKEND WINTER STORM POTENTIAL: New global model runs continue to show a strong signal for winter storm conditions across parts of the Deep South over the weekend. New 12Z model output is attached to this post. Here are the key messages this evening... *The cold air moving into Alabama will be shallow, meaning there is potential for freezing rain (liquid precipitation that falls when surface temperatures are at or below freezing). *A long duration of freezing rain can lead to an ice storm. Thankfully temperatures will be in the 50s over the latter half of the week, so the infrastructure won't be especially cold as the event begins. That is a positive. *The main window for wintry precipitation is over the northern half of Alabama from around 6:00 a.m. Saturday to 6:00 a.m. Sunday. *If low level thermal values are warmer than models suggest, it will simply be a cold, rainy day Saturday. That is a very real possibility. *The cold air will be a bit deeper across the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama, where some snow could be involved. *It is too early to answer questions about specific impact in any given location (like road conditions). *We will be more specific about the event by Wednesday, and a good impact forecast can be made Thursday. But with winter weather situations like this, there will always be uncertainty even one day in advance.
