SB26-111, a bill to protect children from sexual predators, was just killed in Senate Judiciary. For the third time. This bill would have removed probation for those who sexually assault children. That shouldn’t be controversial. But here we are. Even more disturbing — Senator Heinrichsen has supported policies like legalizing prostitution and expanding recognition of polyamorous relationships… yet won’t support putting child rapists behind bars!!! Let that sink in. Colorado continues to protect criminals while victims are left with a lifetime of trauma. We are furious. And we are not backing down. Former State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis was convicted of four felonies, including Attempt to Influence a Public Official, and received probation and community service. Meanwhile, Tina Peters, a non-violent first-time offender, was convicted of the same felony charge and received a 9-year prison sentence. Same felony. Very different outcomes. Justice only works when it is applied evenly, regardless of politics, status, or connections. When similar crimes produce wildly different sentences, it raises serious questions about fairness and equal treatment under the law. Equal justice under the law must mean exactly that — equal.
