@MattD_SC It's the worst aspect of US indies post-Punk (pun not intended), for 2 decades WWE has comprehended the idea of the modern fan's belief at championing a 'grassroots' success and now these fans subconsciously game their appreciation for wrestlers on careerism and brand acumen.

WWE is the only entity I can think of in sports or entertainment where talent build up their name/brand outside to show they are worth hiring only to be completely renamed/rebranded, even when it dilutes a legacy name, so that the company can own them as much as humanly possible.
