A condor on flights of fancy in cloud cuckooland with an MA in Literature to Waste. My account name is a Joycean pun. See who gets it. Red Productivist.

@Logo_Daedalus Eerie and beautiful coincidence that the Qing Empire was also 250 years old in the year that it began the Sino Japanese War and lost to Japan, signalling a new shift in the world's power balance.

This is what the “end of an empire” looks like— it is when it runs against its own limit, & then turns inward. Exploitation *within* the American dominated sphere of the so-called “free world” will increase. European industry is going to be undercut by Americans. They’ll be shipping german factories to guatemala.

Hard to explain to people that the war in Iran is really a war against the “secondary powers” in the US’s orbit— making them more reliant on America in the short term, forcing them to invest more into it.

@Bornonthebayeux Funny thing is that years ago he wrote the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain and no one paid attention because of the GHEY. How trivial and petty that seems now.

@Crowmaonwellth Lonesome Dove actually seems to be having quite a moment lately on bookstagram, for whatever that's worth.

slightly goofy take i'm trying out: american culture structurally overrates physics and its importance because it's the "good" "liberal" science, meanwhile chemistry is german and therefore bad and we're less knowledgable and appreciative of it

Had to cut it short or I'd have spent days working on my review for Tsui Hark's THE BLADE. Rewatch confirming that it's a goddamn masterpiece. The more wuxia films you've seen, the more you will come to appreciate it. I know I love it more now than I did on my first viewing.

@DWLundberg Love those days when you could just go ahead and make the film you wanted, and then they'd cover your ass with the marketing. That movie and The Batman regularly are my favorite Batfilms, because they are for people who wish to go beyond the superhero genre. @troubledwatersx

@DWLundberg I'm surprised how highly rated Tombstone is either. Not seen it in full but the western was so minor in the 90s the comeback online has been stunning.

Funny how THE MATRIX re-wrote the rules and visual language of action films and helped countless members of the LGBTQ community find their identity and voice, but the movie winning this poll is shot with all the skill of a Disney Channel movie with actors cosplaying as cowboys.

@DWLundberg The ingenious thing about that Angels with Dirty Faces ending is how it both satisfies the moralising censors and those looking for complex drama.

NOW! NostalgiaCast gets nostalgic with GROSSE POINTE BLANK, starring John Cusack and Minnie Driver. Listen as Jonny and I talk about the movie as the "Second Coming of PULP FICTION" with its ironic violence, throwback soundtrack, and endlessly quotable dialogue. Give it a shot👇:

At this point it seems likely that 25% of the global consumption of electricity goes into the creation of AI-generated interracial cuckolding videos.

@jmgwritten It's a spectrum because it's a genre defined by location. James Fenimore Cooper, Thomas McGuane, Sergio Leone and Cormac McCarthy are points on a line.

In light of yesterday's conversation about Americana, we need to consider a different but related question: do American Westerns count as Fantasy? I don't think I know the answer
