@makramsn @cremieuxrecueil imo Von Neumann was a greater genius than even a lot of the famous physicists of the time. They're more famous because physics is a reddit marvel star wars field while math leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths, and while Neumann did contribute to physics he was more math

Von Neumann described himself to the Senate as "violently anti-Communist and much more militaristic than the norm." He responded to Oppenheimer saying Manhattan Project scientists had "known sin" with the reply "Sometimes someone confesses a sin in order to take credit for it."

@FriedrichHayek @cremieuxrecueil My PGF fought in the South Pacific, Oppenheimer et al handed him & millions of other young Americans a ticket home. An invasion was plan B, which means no Baby Boom (not in ‘46, anyway) & a depleted response to soviet aggression. It was justified, the end.

WHAT 🤯 A man in his 40s with inflammatory bowel disease, was assessed outside a Tim Hortons, offered MAID, AND driven by the DR to the assisted suicide facility, and killed by MAID 🤯 I honestly thought this headline was fake, but it’s real Welcome to Canada 🇨🇦 I feel sick

@feelsdesperate Basically, in order to reduce harms to the community, this subset of people need to be given a stark choice as society is no longer going to tolerate their behavior. Ironically, that is exactly what happened to me and next month I'll be 8 years clean and sober. It can work.

I think, paradoxically, there has to be a modicum of respect for West Coast homeless people where they are treated as adults who have agency, and if you ask them, ‘Have you made the adult life choice to live in a tent and gobble meth and howl at the moon, is that what you want?’ and they say, ‘yes,’ you just have to accept that, and then all of the paternalistic homelessness industry stuff can be treated as the charade that it is, and you’re left with the naked political decision of whether or not you let a small number of adults engage in extremely selfish and unsafe and disruptive and antisocial behavior that has broad negative externalities for everyone else. I think that’s what Pratt is actually doing here - he’s providing these people with a degree of respect they don’t often get by acknowledging their adult choices and agency and then following through on the logical consequences those choices entail.
Christopher Webb@cwebbonline

The level of disdain Spencer Pratt has for the unhoused is disgusting. And if you’re fine with this kind of talk, I don’t want to know you. Josh Haskell: “What are your plans for the over 40,000 homeless people in Los Angeles?” Spencer Pratt: “Well, they’re not homeless. They’re drug addicts. Most of these people are addicted to fentanyl and meth… They are choosing to be on the streets because they want to do drugs. They don’t want rules. They don’t want to listen. They want to have animals to abuse.”

I have one final message today to the “I want Dort and his friends dead” crowd still employed by the War Department: I don’t want you gone. I NEED you here. The larger your influence is, the more I need people to watch what becomes of you. I need them to see the twitching. The obsession. The hatred. The inability to stop yourselves from spiraling publicly. I need them to watch the mask slide off in real time. Not because I enjoy suffering. There is nothing pleasant about hearing something possessed scream while the shadow leaves it. But people need to hear it anyway. You wished death on people. Suicide on people. Ruin. Isolation. Career destruction. You fed on it for years while calling yourselves compassionate and enlightened. Now look at yourselves. Look at what you became. So stay. Stay in the Department, in uniform, on the timeline. Until you destroy your career on your own. Keep posting about me, obsessing. Keep proving us right in public. Every outburst tears another rotten timber out of the thing you built. Every shriek exposes another crack in the foundation. You are doing more damage to your own cause than any enemy ever could. That is why we need you around. You made me important through fixation. I was never supposed to matter this much. But now you break on me like surf against stone and you cannot help yourselves from returning to do it again. They say never interrupt your enemy while he is making a mistake. Why? You’re going to make it anyway. That is why you never should have been near warriors. You confuse emotion with strategy. You think rage is power and that hysteria is moral clarity. You cannot comprehend finesse or restraint. And you can’t stop feeding the fire even while it consumes you. So no. I do not want you removed. I want you more visible than ever. I want the country to watch the old ideological cathedral burn from the inside while the people who built it scream at the flames. You people act like I’m the sole force behind this. And that if I die, all your problems go away. Nope. A critical mass is already hit. E Pluribus Unum.

@kfgpnz @casadeesamitus This is all reasonable stuff, esp for 2018. By 2026 if hope an MD would recognize that unfortunately there are good reasons for sex-segregation, at one point thinking “theyre like 0.01%, how much of an impact could this really have?” was a defensible perspective.

fun fact elizabeth warren was going to endorse el-sayed but she endorsed mcmorrow at the last second due to the fact that he was misogynistic towards her and her staff also look up what he has to say about gay people in public schools :) he's not a democrat

I will be voting for Abdul El-Sayed, but this is my prediction for the primary: 1) Mallory McMorrow: 37% 2) Abdul El-Sayed: 35% 3) Haley Stevens: 28% #USSenate #Michigan #DemocraticPrimary

This is one of the most important books we've ever done. Derek Chauvin is innocent. Period. Any honest person looking at the evidence would conclude the same. What happened to Chauvin is a national travesty. And it's long past due to correct this embarrassing episode.
Passage Publishing@PassagePress

Today we are proud to announce the release of American Scapegoat: How a Corrupt Justice System Sacrificed Derek Chauvin to the Mob by former federal prosecutor T.J. Harker (@TJ_Harker). Six years ago today, George Floyd died while in custody of Minneapolis beat cop Derek Chauvin, sparking the most destructive riots in our nation's history and becoming the pretext for an era of mass political hysteria that threatened to rip apart the very fabric of American life. Cities burned. Floyd's body was paraded around in a gold casket. Every institution was made to bend the knee to BLM. Ordinary white Americans, represented by the person of Derek Chauvin, were called to account for three centuries of racial grievance. All most Americans saw of that day was the grainy cellphone footage of Officer Chauvin's knee restraining the back of George Floyd's neck. Few bothered to learn any other details about the case, and by the time the trial rolled around, the verdict was a foregone conclusion. An innocent black man had been killed by a racist white cop, they were told. And for America to atone for its original sins, that racist white cop had to pay the price. What they didn't know was that Chauvin's knee did not prevent Floyd from breathing. They didn't know Chauvin was following procedure by the book. They didn't know Floyd had taken lethal amounts of fentanyl minutes before being restrained. They didn't know Floyd had a pre-existing heart condition. They didn't know the autopsy report had been revised under threat of professional harm. They didn't know the original prosecutor removed herself from the case after seeing all of the evidence. They didn't know the subsequent prosecutors had to abandon their theory of the case just days into the trial. They didn't know the prosecution never established a cause of death, let alone that Derek Chauvin was responsible. In American Scapegoat, author T.J. Harker breaks down what happened on that fateful day six years ago, analyzes the thousands of court documents manipulated and recontextualized to achieve the trial result Minnesota politicians demanded, and relives the trial itself in thorough, painstaking detail to definitively show that Derek Chauvin did not kill George Floyd. Never in modern American history has our justice system been so corrupted by public mass hysteria than in the case of Derek Chauvin. This is the story of that trial. This is the story of how a man was sacrificed to the mob. American Scapegoat is available for pre-order now. Coming Fall '26.

@_baklon @JackBauerAD @L0m3z @Heminator Twice, but that’s not really the point. He was completely unconscious, they knew he was intoxicated, maybe it seems ridiculous that police are expected to protect the lives of reckless criminals but he & other officers had a basic responsibility to render aid & could’ve & didnt

29 years in the US today. In 1996, my parents won plane tickets in a literal lottery to leave Albania for the US. They took my brother and I and with a thousand dollars that they had saved up, left behind their jobs, families, friends and everything they knew for the hope of a better life. We didn’t know anyone and our only was option was to move into a hotel room. After a few weeks, we finally found an apartment for the four of us. My mom, a former Architect, worked in a factory while going to night school to learn how to use a computer. My dad, a former banker, worked at Logan airport returning luggage trollies. After 3 years, my dad passed away, leaving my mom to raise my brother and I. She barely knew English, didn’t know how to drive, and worked 2 jobs while finishing night school. Fast forward 25 years. She’s worked as an architect for 25 years and has her own business. My brother and I both got multiple degrees. He’s been a CFO and SVP for multiple public companies. I went through YC, raised millions from investors and started and sold a startup and have angel invested in others. America gave us the opportunity for a better life. All we had to do was work for it. Feel grateful everyday to be a part of the country in the world.

@_baklon @JackBauerAD @L0m3z @Heminator 💯 but once a detainee is unresponsive & likely intoxicated you’d put them in a recovery position & call for an ambulance. If he starts getting agitated then you do what you’ve gotta do, but this dude was unconscious. Yes the deck is stacked against cops but this was crazy.

@L0m3z @Heminator What? There’s a video of Chaivin with his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost 10 minutes. Look, I’m a pro cop as they come. And yeah, George Floyd was a reprobate. But this is ridiculous.

The image depicts Katherine Cathey, the pregnant widow of U.S. Marine 2nd Lt. James “Jim” Cathey, lying on an air mattress on the floor in front of her husband’s flag-draped casket the night before his burial. A Marine honor guard stands vigil in the background. Jim Cathey was tragically killed in action in Iraq in August 2005. Overcome with grief, Katherine refused to leave her husband’s casket. She requested to spend one final night with him. Two Marines went to great lengths to provide her with a makeshift bed, using a mattress and pillows on the floor. One Marine stood guard over her and the casket throughout the night. This powerful and Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph was captured by Todd Heisler in 2005 as part of his series “Jim Comes Home” for the Rocky Mountain News.
