I really don’t understand this position that always ends up being about price (e.g. “v1 is 10% of the value, v2 are overvalued status assets”). Many (if not most) pre-ERC721 contracts have multiple versions due to deployment flaws, there’s nothing exceptional or controversial about that. Yet with Punks, it becomes a debate only because of the current v2 status and some people hoping to catch a train they missed. No one cared about v1 before the 2022 wrapper, and Larva Labs was transparent about that part of the history. And those who started caring after the wrapper were, for the most part, not even Punk holders, while let’s be honest, they could’ve easily afforded them. The v2 contract, precisely by fixing v1 flaws, is what inspired the ERC-721 standard (limiting flawed contracts after that) and the entire NFT market, not v1. v2 holds the collectibility and trading provenance, not v1. The whole community and cultural relevance of CryptoPunks evolved around v2, not v1. Want complete provenance for a Punk? Just grab both v1 and v2, that’s literally it. If your Punk’s v1 isn’t wrapped, then the v2 version may be its only collectible remain. If you want a v1-only, you’ll always depend on a retroactive wrapper and be in awkward competition with the v2 holder, who actually owns the 5 years on-chain provenance predating that wrapper. v1+v2 > v2 > v1. Period.

Today I sold my V2 punk to purchase more V1s. It's becoming clear that the V1/V2 punk argument rests solely on the latter group's ability to brand themselves as "real" through their social network. If the story of the flawed V1 contract were to play out today, duplicating and then airdropping the new collection would be an unacceptable solution. This made all punks 1 of 2s, with V1 punks as the “first editions” of these assets. In all other collectible classes, the earlier editions of something are more sought after. This is also generally true of the scarcer misprint variants of assets - there are far fewer V1s still in circulation. The solution was accepted at the time of the V1 exploit because there were minimal options with which to view onchain assets - what Larva Labs platformed was what everyone got to interact with. With the introduction of third party marketplaces and the V1 wrapping contract, this ceased to be the case. Very few people in the community back in the day had enough foresight to realise that all LL had done was sweep the originals under the rug. The narrative that V2s are in some way superior is defended largely by the snobbish type of collector who judges art only by its price, and has an emotional attachment to the status that owning this asset gives them. They see attempts to discuss the onchain truth of the story as an attack on their gated social group and the sunk cost of their investment. This is ignorance of the provenance uniquely available through the blockchain, and an elitist rejection of another community as a way of preserving capital; they are neither ‘crypto’ nor ‘punk’. Any newcomer to onchain collecting, being exposed to the publicly verifiable and immutable information available surrounding these collections, would judge V1s - at less than 10% the price of the V2s - as the more grounded choice. There are a handful of common counterarguments. V1s are unable to use their original in-contract marketplace because of the exploit, but this experience has been abstracted into existence. The chains of ownership are different as they fork after the V2 airdrop, meaning they have different social networks, but V1s have a nascent community capturing the more historically minded. V1s do not receive the same IP rights as V2s, although onchain PfP IP has proven to be rarely utilized. There are 20,000 punks. The V1 punks are the original cryptopunks that were claimed on June 9th, 2017. The later V2 punks have the backing of their creators and are more well known, benefitting disproportionately from this publicity. This is a fascinating case of art undergoing a literal schism - one collection to serve the will of the artist, and the other becoming inseparable from its foundations, the machine it was built to showcase. This machine will outlive us, and with it, the story of how a failure of imagination led to the burying of the truth of its icons.

@Foobazzler Yes, it truly was revived with the intent to profit in the fall of 2021 when real Punks were $300k each. Remember, CryptoPunks were never about profit they were avante-garde art that 99.9% of people wouldn’t and didn’t buy. The beauty was the organic nature of cultural discovery.

Just check the chain. What does the chain show? It shows that activity completely stopped on the V1 contract once the marketplace bug was discovered and only resumed once the new updated contract was deployed. In other words, the community schelling point quickly shifted to the new contract—and not for philosophical or ideological reasons like with BTC and BCH but merely for technical reasons so that punks would have a functional marketplace. The community wholly embraced this change at the time, there wasn’t any huge controversy or debate. The old contract was completely abandoned and ignored until opportunists who had missed the punks run rediscovered the V1 tokens, wrapped them, and started peddling the narrative that V1s are actually the original authentic tokens and that cryptopunks are actually just a copy pasta. V1s are cool historical artifacts, they have provenance, they are part of the punks lore, they will always have value, they may even see more ROI given their lower marketcap But they don’t have an unbroken community lineage. Their community effectively started in 2021 when the project was rediscovered and after the Cryptopunks community had already been formed.

The goal of reducing the US trade deficit and getting more domestic manufacturing going again is a very noble goal to have. The problem is that a sledgehammer approach isn't the way to solve the problem.
