It existed before Tumblr - that’s the reason why. Every fandom I loved that turned super weird in the 2010’s was directly influenced by Tumblr fandoms - Percy Jackson, Avatar, etc. - the writers listened to users on Tumblr and wrote their stories to please those people. The problem is that teenagers on Tumblr know nothing about good story structure, so taking feedback from them exclusively led to characters like Korra, who fucks her way through her entire friend group but is somehow still loved and praised by everyone at the end of the day.
