AI protein folding methods haven't really "solved” protein folding, They solved final structure prediction. That’s huge, but it’s only part of the story. AI is great at predicting end states, but struggles with: • Folding pathways • Intermediate states • Protein dynamics and rare events (misfolding - the cause of disease) That’s where projects like Folding@home and Molecular Dynamics are still essential. They simulate the process, not just the result. What’s really happened isn’t a replacement, it’s a shift: AI narrows the search space → distributed computing explores the physics in detail. Bottom line: AI (like AlphaFold) map the destination. But brute force computations (and smart simulations) are still required to understand the journey to get there ... if that makes sense :)

In late 2025, our scientific research blockchain joined an exclusive club - part of a small group of blockchains with the highest confirmed altitudes in history. We folded proteins on our PCs (many on #AWS cloud) to help medical research on @foldingathome's distributed computing network - generating tokens on our blockchain. Then we sent a cold storage copy 100 km straight up with Blue Origin on a suborbital trajectory. Now it’s back on Earth. Proof-of-Work? Michaela Benthaus, 33, accompanied five other passengers launching from West Texas with Jeff Bezos’ company Blue Origin. The 10-minute space-skimming flight required only minor adjustments to accommodate Benthaus, according to the company, as the autonomous New Shepard capsule was designed with accessibility in mind. Work continues on new antivirals, like the potential coronavirus treatment that we published just over a year ago. We’ve also continued to develop new strategies for combating Ebola and related filoviruses and to advance our understanding of drug resistance, particularly in the case of cancer. These biomedical applications are all enabled by our ongoing work on basic biology.
