Senator John Hickenlooper says it sets a “bad precedent” that Governor Jared Polis commuted Tina Peters’ sentence. The real bad precedent is selective outrage when justice becomes political. You don’t have to agree with Tina Peters or everything she did to recognize that a 9-year sentence for a nonviolent election-related case raised serious concerns for many Americans across the political spectrum. Mercy, proportionality, and equal application of justice matter — especially in a nation already divided over trust in institutions and elections. Commuting a sentence is not the same as declaring someone innocent. Governors have long held clemency powers precisely for moments where punishment appears excessive, politically charged, or damaging to public trust. If we want Americans to believe in the integrity of our system, then justice cannot look like vengeance. It must be consistent, balanced, and free from political theater. Colorado deserves leaders willing to calm division — not inflame it when it’s politically convenient.
