When I was working on DirectX, the idea that game developers were elite was obvious to those of us who engaged directly, but had to be drilled into most Microsofties. I’ll never forget how astounded Andy van Dam was when we showed him a Game Developer article on quaternions.
Casey Muratori@cmuratori

"They don't understand because they're a game developer" is total nonsense. Games are a superset domain. We make editors, servers, databases, build systems, large asset management, etc. If anything, if you're going to dismiss someone, dismiss people who haven't worked on games.

Never did I expect this to happen! @nothings joined me to discuss his legendary work on software rendering! Before there were GPUs, two extraordinary minds led the frontier of rendering on CPUs. When @ID_AA_Carmack worked on Quake, @nothings championed rendering technology at famed Looking Glass Studios which resulted in groundbreaking Thief: The Dark Project. Join us for a 5h deep dive in a world of incredible optimizations, counting cycles and ridiculous tricks! @nothings, it was an honor! Thank you so much for your time and openness! Loved that discussion, the only regret is that my brain was fried after 5h and couldn't handle anymore! Thank you!

[2/2] ... so along with a link to the video, I've also included a few good "recommended reading" links for folks who want to start their own dive into the history. Check it all out here: computerenhance.com/p/the-big-oops…

I've noticed people often describe their pivot from highly abstracted web / frameworks / engines etc into lower level programming as "freeing". I think that stems from realising that most of the rules about programming are just made up, and the machine is amazingly flexible.
