We do not need to spend more money on bombs and bullets. We need to spend more on housing, schools and our NHS instead. A roof over your head. Enough food to feed your children. A public health service you can rely on in your time of need. That is what real security means.

A caller to LBC's @IainDale says the country is ungovernable until we stop mass immigration and begin mass deportations. He notes the disconnect and the ruling classes. My aim would be 5-10 million.

We used to live in a high-trust society. In many ways, we led the world in it. We relied on the basic decency of the people around us to feel safe. Anxiety was low. And for the small minority who chose not to live by those standards, the law dealt with them — removing them from our streets and sending a clear message to anyone tempted to follow the same path. The rest of us were left free to live in relative peace. Fear was minimal. An irrational fear is an intense emotional or physical reaction that is disproportionate to the actual danger. I think about this often. Someone could accelerate towards a zebra crossing as you step out. Someone could throw a glass of vodka over you and light a match in the pub. My mum can’t drive anywhere she hasn’t driven before because of irrational fears. They’ve become so deeply ingrained that, for the last 15 years, she has travelled to the same handful of places for days out. “What if I break down?” she’d say. When I suggested she could simply call someone, the response became, “What if my phone’s dead?” She can’t help it. The fear crept in gradually, despite having no real experiences to justify it. Being beheaded in the street should be an irrational fear. Having your daughters sexually assaulted, raped, or murdered should be an irrational fear. I grew up in the 1990s, and one thing is painfully obvious: things have changed, even within my own lifetime. I wouldn’t dream of letting my daughter roam freely at the age I was out playing in the streets. Not a chance. There has been a complete collapse in respect for law enforcement because there has been a collapse in respect for the laws themselves. How can people be expected to respect laws when so many have come to believe those laws have contributed to the decline of the nation? This has been happening for decades. A slow, relentless erosion of the social fabric that once held these islands together. And throughout it all, there have been those who have profited from it. New industries. New bureaucracies. Entire careers built on managing the consequences rather than addressing the causes. It’s time to push back. What we need now are decent men with courage and conviction — men who are capable of being dangerous when circumstances demand it, yet disciplined enough to remain under control. Not weak, endlessly agreeable men who stand for nothing. We can change this if we choose to. And we will. @RestoreBritain #IWantMyCountryBack
