Yesterday, the Brusselian leaders, with @vonderleyen at the forefront, reached an agreement with President @ZelenskyyUa to continue the war. This is bad news for Europe. A war is being prolonged that clearly has no solution on the battlefield, yet causes immense destruction. Every month, 35,000 people are killed or left permanently disabled, while the front lines barely budge. Hundreds of thousands of widows and orphans, mothers mourning their sons. This is what Brussels is supporting. Continuing the war costs European citizens enormous sums of money. Hundreds of billions of euros are being squandered with no result. In this war, it is not the Russians who are being crushed, but Europeans. On top of this, the risk of nuclear escalation remains, as Europe is confronting a nuclear power. If we allowed it, Hungary would be dragged in as well. Last week in Munich, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, under German patronage, concluded a secret pact with Brusselian leaders. In exchange for the support of Brussels and Kyiv, he would pull Hungary into the group of European countries at war, agree to further financial support for Ukraine, and cut Hungary off from affordable oil and gas. Hungary must stay out of this. The Hungarian government must safeguard the country’s security. Hungarians can count on us: that is exactly what we will do. 🇭🇺

RIP to the great Dutch Grandmaster Jan Timman. He was the leader of the new Western generation after Fischer. Unlike many, he was a serious analyst and researcher who loved every aspect of the game, including compositions. He was at his powerful peak through the 1980s to 1993, when he lost matches to his peer Karpov and Nigel Short of the new generation. We dueled many times, including his victory in my "heaviest" game ever, where our moves were mirrored by machines moving huge shipping containers as pieces in Rotterdam! We also argued many times, as he also cared deeply about the future of our beloved game. He was my first opponent after I became world champion in 1985, pictured here in Hilversum, NED, before game 5 of our match on Dec 20, I believe.

Many of the most talented Dutch people are going to leave the Netherlands in the coming years, accelerated by insane new taxes on unrealised (!) gains. The push factors are immense. Cost of living is rising rapidly, whilst the quality of living is decreasing. Mass migration is destroying our social fabric and security, making it ever less likely that our children will have a future here. I predict that in the coming years, the pull factors will also start picking up speed. Countries all over the world will start competing to attract the efflux of talented, wealthy Europeans. Combine both factors, and they will create an unstoppable spiral. It will become increasingly difficult to stay in Europe, whilst becoming increasingly attractive and easy to leave. Our last chance to prevent this, is to implement large scale remigration, better today than tomorrow.

I don’t want any of you to live that middling, numb, mediocre life. I want you to feel the highest highs. And for that, I need you to learn that you’ll also have to experience the lowest lows. It might not seem fair that the same map can lead you to either brutal heartbreak or total greatness, but that’s life. We saw it in the Super Bowl. Haters will call the Patriots losers. But there are no real losers who play in the Super Bowl. I don’t mean that in the participation trophy sense, because I can’t stand the idea that everyone deserves a trophy. I mean that everybody who goes all out, who steps into that arena and gives everything, is a champion, even if they don’t deserve a trophy. They have lived life fully, rejecting the numb mediocrity most people accept. The only real losers are the ones who never leave the safety of the sidelines. After these Olympics, Lindsey won’t go home with a medal. She will go home with the heart of a champion. I hope she knows that she did a great public service for all of us. She demonstrated that thriving means being comfortable on that razor’s edge of victory and defeat. She reminded us that coming up short in a worthy cause beats becoming one of those cold and timid souls. She showed us how to live, not just to exist. They don’t have a medal for that. Life’s greatest wins live inside you. My challenge to all of you this week comes in two parts, and one is easier than the other. Let’s start with the easier one: don’t be a loser who hates from the sidelines. I have a feeling most of you can already check this one off, because this is the positive corner of the internet. But if you find yourself naysaying or enjoying other people’s failure, it’s the first sign that you are falling into that numb, cold, timid life. Stop it. Now, the harder one. Take the risk. Put yourself out there. All of you have something you’ve shied away from, something where you thought about jumping into the arena but hesitated when you thought of the risk of failure. Korte termijn begrotingswinst, lange termijn vernietiging van vertrouwen, rechtvaardigheid en investeringsklimaat. 🇳🇱 Javier in Davos: Een toespraak over de morele wortels van het liberalisme Hier is mijn lezing van de toespraak die president @JMilei vandaag hield in @Davos, voor wie een beknopte samenvatting wil. Hij begint met de stelling dat het liberalisme twee fundamentele principes erkent: het recht op leven en het recht op vrijheid (waarbij vrijheid niet het recht inhoudt om anderen te schaden). Uit deze rechten vloeien andere voort, zoals het recht op eigendom: ik ben vrij om dingen te creëren, en niemand zou mij of mijn eigendom mogen aantasten. Een rechtvaardig systeem respecteert deze rechten. Efficiëntie is zinloos als dit ten koste gaat van deze rechten. Het vrijemarktkapitalisme, gebouwd op privé-eigendom, vertrekt vanuit het respect voor deze fundamentele rechten van de mens. In die zin is het kapitalisme rechtvaardig. Tegelijkertijd creëert het kapitalisme efficiëntie, omdat alleen de volledige uitoefening van eigendomsrechten leidt tot het beste beheer van dat eigendom. Zo is het kapitalisme zowel een rechtvaardig als een efficiënt systeem. Overheidsingrijpen schendt in veel gevallen het privé-eigendom. Meer overheid betekent minder rechtvaardigheid en minder efficiëntie. Regulering tast eveneens het eigendomsrecht aan (bijvoorbeeld: huurprijsregulering verlaagt de waarde van je eigendom). Overgereguleerde economieën zijn daarom zowel minder rechtvaardig als minder efficiënt. De president verwees naar Xenophon, Ulpianus en de principes van de joods-christelijke leer (“gij zult niet doden”, “gij zult niet stelen”) als voorlopers van deze ideeën, die later het liberalisme vormgaven. Vervolgens noemde hij de lange reeks denkers die bijdroegen aan het consolideren van de ideeën van vrijheid. Het is moeilijk een zo krachtige, rijk aan verwijzingen zijnde en zeer filosofische toespraak samen te vatten, maar ik denk dat dit de kernpunten zijn. Een noodzakelijke toespraak in de tijd waarin wij leven. VLLC!

JAVIER EN DAVOS: UN DISCURSO SOBRE LAS RAICES MORALES DEL LIBERALISMO. Les doy mi lectura del discurso que dio el Presidente @JMilei hoy en @Davos, para aquellos que quieran una rápida síntesis. Arranca con el planteo que el liberalismo acepta dos principios básicos: el derecho a la libertad y a la vida (es decir, que el derecho a la libertad no incluye la libertad de agredir a otro). De estos derechos se derivan otros, como el derecho de propiedad: soy libre de construir cosas y nadie debiera agredirme ni a mí ni a mi propiedad. Un sistema justo respeta estos derechos. De nada sirve la eficiencia si implica resignar estos derechos. El capitalismo de libre empresa que se construye sobre la propiedad privada, parte del respeto de estos derechos fundamentales del hombre. Es, en este sentido, que el capitalismo es justo. A su vez el capitalismo genera eficiencias, porque solo el pleno ejercicio del derecho de propiedad lleva a la mejor administración de esa propiedad. De esa manera el capitalismo es, a la vez, un sistema justo y un sistema eficiente. Las intervenciones del Estado en muchos casos violentan la propiedad privada. Con más Estado tenemos menos justicia y tenemos menos eficiencia. La regulación también afecta el derecho de propiedad (una ley de control de alquileres afecta el valor de tu propiedad). Las economías sobre-reguladas también son menos justas y menos eficientes. El presidente citó a Jenofonte, Ulpiano y a los principios de la doctrina judeo-cristiana (no matarás, no robarás) como antecedentes de estos conceptos que luego construyeron el liberalismo. Luego aportó referencias a la larga lista de autores que contribuyeron a consolidar las ideas de la libertad. Difícil sintetizar un discurso contundente, lleno de referencias, y muy filosófico, pero creo que estos son los conceptos centrales. Un discurso necesario en los tiempos que corren. VLLC!

This is REALLY bad for GOLD. Scientists can literally recreate Gold in a lab and this makes Gold no longer scarce. For those that think I am being alarmist or dramatic, study the Diamond chart since the same thing happened and scientists created lab grown diamonds. Neither the human eye nor with a mag glass can tell the difference and the cost is about 1% of the original. Once people realize this, there will be a huge shift into Bitcoin.

Trump told NBC that under Biden we were losing $5 billion per day on trade. He claims that thanks to him we are no longer losing on trade. Yet our trade deficits under his term have been larger than they were under Biden. So we are losing more on trade now than we were before.
