Just watched Dunkirk for the first time, loved it. I couldn't help noticing Nolan used zero diversity casting. 1940s English people looked like they would have looked. 2017 was a long time ago I guess.

This is a popular misconception. Cleopatra was GREEK. She was the queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty which were the Greeks that ruled Egypt after Alexander the Great died. She actually probably did look a lot like Elizabeth Taylor.

I have not seen The Odyssey yet, so I can’t give my final verdict on it. All I will say is that these “actually the movie isn’t woke” takes from conservatives strike me as implausible. Casting a self-mutilated trans-identifying female as a male warrior is one of the wokest things any mainstream film director has ever done in a movie, by any objective measure. It’s hard to imagine any context that could somehow make that choice not woke.

Christopher Nolan used to make movies like The Prestige. Then he made Inception, which was definitely unique and a cool mind bender. Then he made a movie about Matthew McConaughey ugly crying in outer space. Then he made a movie for himself, with impossible to hear dialogue and an even more impossible to understand premise. Then he made a porno pretending to be a movie about the atom bomb. Then he made a gay Odyssey. And that’s how you go from greatest director of a generation to satisfying the artistic tastes of David French.

Every detail of Nolan’s Odyssey film was designed to rage bait everyone who is interested in and loves the Odyssey story. And harness that negative energy for power. This is what makes the film evil, no matter what artistic merits the final product may have had or lacked.

The fact is, historical accuracy doesn't matter if the story works. Casting swaps don't matter if the story workds. If it doesn't work, your mind starts to drift and wander. Having things feel authentic only serves to immerse you in a story but the story has to still be good.

What they DON'T tell you: It's only the THIRD biggest opening of the year, behind "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie." TRANSLATION: Not as good as a talking toy and a video game movie. They don't tell you it likely needs around $800 million worldwide just to break even. Not to make a profit. Just to break even. And the studio typically keeps only about 50–55% of the domestic gate - and less internationally. And the $139.6 million from 73 international markets is absolutely DISASTROUS for the great Nolan when you consider that his own country, United Kingdom/Ireland, only spent $17.4M... ...with every other territory coming in way less. And finally, they don't tell you that "Odyssey" only has one more CLEAR weekend before "Spider-Man" webs up the box office. A huge opening? Relative. A financial triumph? We shall see.
