While the majority of classicists are embracing the spectacle of Christopher Nolan’s #TheOdyssey, opinions start to diverge when discussing his adaptation of Homer’s language for the screenplay. There is no single “original” version of “The Odyssey” in a modern sense — that’s because the poem emerged from an oral tradition. “‘Homer’s Odyssey’ was already historical fiction, reimagining an ancient past when it was first composed,” says Richard P. Martin, a professor of Greek and Latin literature at Stanford. “Fellow classicists are happy with Nolan’s version because we all recognize it is a version. There is no ‘correct’ treatment, because every generation makes its own version of the poem, either by retranslation or revisualization in various media. All publicity about Homer is good publicity.” Read the full report on what academics are saying about “The Odyssey”: wp.me/pc8uak-1lHy86

@raffterman2003 @Variety It does when you apply postmodernism to the critique. Postmodernism is the cancer running through pretty much every humanity's department in every university in the country

@Variety Thats just dumb, so anything that is documented mythology can be changed by anyone and recognized as the same stories that the recognized original is. Thats just makes no sense. Then whats the point of recognizing the original mythology and how it fits into our human history.

@comic_boss @Variety Emily Wilson's translation is pretty awful. Nothing like taking a 2,800-year-old text and putting a feminist spin on it.

The character Sinon isn't in either the Iliad or the a Odyssey. Then even though Elliot Page is only in the movie for about 5 minutes of total screen time, the character Sinon's story is a major throughpoint in the plot. And it is absurd that Nolan decided to include a 5'1" trans girl/boy as the actual only real true hero in the story. The character is so important that when Odysseus finally returns home, he takes on the name Sinon as he disguises himself as a beggar.

@janiczek_m @Variety Casting is not what they’re talking about with treatment of the text. But even if it was, two people who are in the movie for a grand total of two minutes each, would change the entire movie? 4 minutes out of 172 minutes is what makes it garbage?

The only way that you can like this film is if you are completely ignorant of the source material. Nolan deconstructs odysseus's character, subverts every universal theme in the epic, has a script that is so horribly written that it's cringy at times, and don't get me started on the casting choices.

Don’t listen to manufactured online outrage. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is immense filmmaking. We’ve never had a movie like this in my lifetime and I fear we never will again.

@GabrielSaidR He also kidnapped a teenage Pocahontas. Took her to England. Married her even though she was already married with a child. Knocked her up and killed her. Great guy.

There was another continuance hearing that just took place to delay Parker Kingston's rape trial by another two months at the request of the prosecution & alleged victim. The judge denied the motion & dismissed the case without prejudice, meaning it's able to be re-filed (essentially a temporary dismissal) The motion would have moved the trial date(s) to take place in September. There is now no trial date(s) set #BYUfootball #BYU

I reached out to BYU athletics to ask questions about this video — including why an expelled student was allowed to use university resources. They sent the following statement: “The video currently circulating is from a workout not run by BYU players or staff. This was not a BYU team activity and BYU officials were unaware of it taking place and have responded appropriately.” @KUTV2News - more coming up at 10

I am just a teacher. And I'm happy for Elon and America. Musk becoming a trillionaire cost me nothing and had no impact on the cost of groceries. But Elon's companies employ thousands, and help those employees build their own wealth. What have you done Gavin, apart from protecting fraudsters?

Americans are struggling to pay for groceries and gas while Elon Musk becomes a TRILLIONAIRE. When the federal government is for sale, the rich get richer and everyone else gets shafted. The system is rigged.

@PatUnleashed You're surprised by this reaction? The black community thought justice was served when OJ was acquitted. And polls showed that people's opinion of OJ's innocence or guilt was dependent on the race of the person asked. Honestly I'm surprised there were no riots.

@JakeHatch Jake. You could not be more wrong on your takes this morning about Sorsby and Texas Tech. This decision doesn't help the Big 12 in any way. This isn't about BYU playing and beating the best. This isn't about the Big 12 having a villain. This is about a single judge making a decision that could destroy sport as we know it. Not just college football, but all sports. The fact that TTU stuck with Sorsby shows that they put themselves ahead of the Big 12 conference and college football.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark to ESPN on Brendan Sorsby ruling: “The ramifications of today’s ruling are significant and could have broad impacts across college athletics, creating great concern amongst our membership. I’ve been consulting with our key stakeholders and have scheduled meetings with our Conference ADs and Executive Board this week. We are also in touch with Charlie Baker and anticipate the NCAA to appeal the order in the next 24-48 hours. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation.”

Thank you for the Greek original Green clarification. But, honestly I think this is a difference without distinction. "Sharing in glory" means essentially the same thing as being "joint heirs with Christ." And the fact that Paul differentiated God and Christ in that scripture signifies that they are different persons.

So, when Romans 8 when it says, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together" what does that mean?

How do you read that as the Trinity? Those are three distinct personages. You might want to look at the origins of the council of Nicea and why they ended up settling on nicean Creed. History tells us that the Nicean creed was an attempt to settle the dispute within the early Christian Church regarding the nature of God, precisely because the Bible appears to be contradictory.
