@WilliamJHague What happens when the system is hacked and data is compromised? (And it will be). Digital id will include everything about you, including bank accounts, medical records, payment history. If the data is compromised then people will be blocked from doing anything or going anywhere

Further progress on GNR saloon 3087. Dark blue going on the letters and white flashing. Fantastic work by Sarah the Signwriter. She is not on X unfortunately. #greatnorthernrailway #doncasterworks

@PaulWhitewick Severe pruning required but perhaps went too far?A lack of forward planning on how demographics might change. No thought on what future travel needs might be. Containerised freight was a good move and axing freight only lines that lingered on from 1950s passenger cuts essential

@BRTANorthernEng I’m not convinced on Harrogate to Ripon. That would not deliver anything more than the 36 bus can. It needs to be extended to Northallerton or Thirsk to create a trunk route and give both Harrogate and Ripon a trans Pennine service once more.

@PickGS There is not much around Boulby so I guess the case for it centres around Loftus and Skinningrove. Is there room to get a spur in from Saltburn otherwise through trains would bypass that station.

TVCA cabinet agrees £1m to examine reopening Boulby line (part of a route which once continued to Whitby & Scarborough) to passenger traffic. Interestingly, there didn't seem wider interest in pushing this when a borough councillor lobbied not so long ago. teesvalley-ca.gov.uk/investments/ea…

@PickGS The article says the £1m funding was approved in January 2024. Is that a typo?

I should add, it got as far as the Restoring Your Railway ideas fund, but wasn't selected to progress through the scheme.

Except: 1. Anyone who buys ANYTHING – As inflation rises, the cost of goods and services increases, eroding purchasing power. 2. Anyone with savings – Savings accounts and investments face declining real value as interest rates fail to keep up with inflation. 3. Anyone who borrows – Rising interest rates increase the cost of mortgages, loans, and credit card repayments. 4. Farmers – Higher costs for equipment, fertiliser, feed, and fuel, coupled with market volatility, place additional strain on agricultural businesses. Not to mention the hit to inheritance tax. 5. Parents of privately-schooled children – Increased school fees due to rising costs, along with VAT on private education. 6. People who lose jobs due to Employer National Insurance Contributions increases – Businesses may reduce their workforce to offset higher employment costs. 7. People who don’t get pay rises due to Employer NIC increases – Employers facing higher NIC costs may freeze or limit salary increases. 8. WASPI women – Women born in the 1950s, affected by changes to the state pension age, still face financial hardship and lack of compensation. 9. Renters – Increased mortgage rates often lead landlords to raise rents, further burdening tenants. 10. Young people starting out – Rising costs of living, higher rents, and student loan repayments hinder financial stability for those entering the workforce. 11. Pensioners – Fixed incomes lose value as inflation diminishes the purchasing power of pensions. 12. Small business owners – Rising input costs, increased energy bills, higher taxation, and reduced consumer spending make it difficult for small businesses to maintain profitability. 13. Business owners paying Employer NIC – Employers face higher costs due to increased NIC rates, which affect hiring decisions and lead to reduced workforce growth. 14. Dividend recipients – Higher dividend tax rates and frozen allowances reduce net returns for small business owners and investors reliant on dividend income. 15. Public sector workers – Wage freezes or below-inflation pay rises, coupled with increased living costs, reduce real incomes. 16. Energy consumers – Higher energy costs, exacerbated by inflation and market fluctuations, disproportionately affect lower-income households. 17. First-time homebuyers – Rising mortgage rates and house prices make it even more challenging to enter the property market. 18. Carers – Increased costs of care, coupled with limited financial support, place additional strain on unpaid or low-paid carers. 19. People relying on benefits – Benefits often fail to keep pace with inflation, leaving vulnerable individuals worse off. 20. Healthcare workers – Pressures from stagnant wages, increased workloads, and rising living costs exacerbate workforce dissatisfaction. 21. Commuters – Rising fuel prices and higher public transport costs place additional financial pressure on those who travel for work. 22. Pensioners relying on Winter Fuel Allowance – Increased energy costs mean the allowance no longer sufficiently offsets heating expenses for vulnerable groups, particularly pensioners. 23. People affected by inheritance tax thresholds – Rising property values due to inflation lead to more estates falling into the inheritance tax bracket, increasing the burden on heirs. 24. Pensioners with defined contribution pensions – Market instability and rising inflation reduce the real value of pension pots, especially for those already in drawdown. 25. Future pensioners – Delayed pension age increases and inadequate contributions risk insufficient retirement income for younger generations. 26. Business owners dependent on dividends – Entrepreneurs who rely on dividends for income see their take-home earnings reduced due to increased taxation and frozen thresholds. 27. Owner-operators struggling with NIC – The rising burden of Employer NIC directly impacts hiring, wage growth, and investment in new business ventures. Feel free to continue the list, but this is hardly helping working people.

Mass-scale panels on prime agricultural land shouldn’t be allowed. As well as destroying our beautiful countryside, it reduces our food supply. Put solar on brownfields, car parks and roofs instead.

@GarethDennis We were just starting to get some joined up thinking on how transport should look in the future. She was a breath of fresh air compared to the previous feckless Tory incumbent in that role. Charitably described as a tw— in your book Gareth!!
