Comp update: Kirk Cousins will sign a five-year, $172 million deal with the Raiders that in reality is a one-year, fully-guaranteed $20 million deal that also contains a club option for two years at $80M. The Falcons will pay Cousins $8.7 million this season, the Raiders another $1.3 million and Las Vegas also agreed to pay its new QB a fully-guaranteed $10 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2027 new league year. @hellofootball11 It was signed during his rookie contract. There was no salary to be spread out in that year. It was the opposite. They used the cheap rookie years to replace future salary with a signing bonus so it could be spread out during his cheap rookie years vs all being on the extension

I think you’re confused. A signing bonus is used to spread out the cap hit, yes, but that money still needs to be earned by the player completing the contract they signed.
They do not need to utilize a signing bonus to smooth out year to year cap hits. The same thing could have been accomplished by adjusting the base salaries each year and then making the player earn their salary each year they are on the roster. They give signing bonuses because the player wants their money now, not in 3 years or whatever. If given the option, a team would much rather have higher base salaries each year than give an up front signing bonus to the player. Signing bonuses are done for the advantage of then players, not the team - period.
