Head impacts do more than damage brain tissue – they may disrupt how blood flow and neural activity work together, with consequences that current injury models often miss. Researchers probed this issue by integrating biomechanical and neurodynamic modeling approaches to assess how head impacts alter large-scale brain activity via structural damage and shifts in local tissue oxygenation. Using a network model informed by structural and vascular dynamics, they simulated 53 real-world head impacts and tracked changes in brain activity across different vascular anatomies. The model showed strong discrimination between concussion and non-concussion cases while revealing distinct patterns of network disruption across injury types. It also showed that vascular differences can influence how resilient the brain is to these effects. Understanding how vascular dynamics shape brain response to impact could enable more personalized injury prediction, protection strategies, and recovery pathways.
