The Trump administration has effectively ended its legal fight to impose a flat 15% cap on NIH indirect-costs by letting the deadline to appeal to the Supreme Court pass without filing. That means the earlier court rulings blocking the policy remain in place.

We are thrilled to partner with @ALSTDI to develop new mRNA lipid nanoparticle therapeutics for ALS patients! Therapeutic delivery to the brain remains a challenge, but we are hopeful that new mRNA LNP tech developed by @_emilyhan_ @MonicaZhong5 can overcome these barriers!

Penn Engineers redesigned a key component of lipid nanoparticles used in mRNA vaccines. The new aroLNPs steer mRNA toward lymph nodes, potentially enabling more precise, lower-dose vaccines. “If we can make the delivery process more precise, we can potentially lower the dose needed to achieve immunity,” says Hannah Yamagata, a @pennbioeng doctoral student in the Mitchell Lab (@MJMitchell_Lab) and first author of the study. bit.ly/4sSAspY bit.ly/3NSd2Si

Destiny is persistence. Robert S. Langer, FNAI, pursued ideas others dismissed as impossible. In the 1970s, he began applying chemical engineering to biology and medicine at a time when those fields were rarely combined. After his first nine research grant proposals were rejected, he persisted, and in doing so, helped lay the foundations for controlled drug delivery and nanomedicine. Through patenting, licensing, and entrepreneurship, technologies originating from his lab have enabled treatments for cancer, diabetes, infectious disease, and many other conditions, reaching millions — and in some cases billions — of people worldwide. His influence also lives through the inventors he has mentored. More than 50 of his former students and postdoctoral researchers have become NAI Fellows. We’re delighted to welcome NAI Fellow Robert S. Langer as a speaker at the National Academy of Inventors’ 15th Annual Conference, June 1–4, 2026, in Los Angeles.
