Yes! One of my top teaching points for residents. The tip of the tube will end up on the invisible line formed by where you made the skin incision and where you went through the chest wall.
Tim Coats@TJCoats

A chest drain will go in the same direction as the tunnel you make through the chest. Common error is for a pneumothorax drain to go down & back. This happens because when we stand next to the bed our instruments naturally point in that direction. Solution…….

Surgery is a "wicked" environment: feedback is delayed, noisy, and often biased. My essay on why experience doesn't always equal mastery, and how to learn when the feedback loops are broken. leezhaomd.org/post/the-wicke… #MedTwitter #Surgery #MedEd

The last full OR week of the year was my busiest. Patients want to use the holidays to recover. We adjust our schedules, make necessary changes, work a little harder, and accommodate. We’re here to serve our pts. We’re grateful for the opportunity and the trust. #northwestern

@ShandaBlackmon Used this for boards, in real life, and teach it the residents I now train! I add Surveillance as well. Yes @DrewMoghanaki , the thoracic boards test on ALL treatment options for thoracic malignancies. And the correct answer is NOT always surgery.

Strategy for approaching a thoracic oncology case: Name the Disease- (Establish diagnosis) Stage the disease Operability (PFTs, ECOG, frailty & dementia assessment, underlying dz- is the patient fit enough to undergo surgery?) Resectability- can you resect or get it all out? Biology to Consider- will it quickly recur and offer no benefit to resection? Thanks to RTR for this teaching! @BCMLungInst @BCM_Surgery @TSRA

Lots of strange conversations these days. However, wanted to respond to one thread on this platform about not wanting to do extra work (do the bare minimum). If your view of life is through the lens of transactions, you will miss out. Instead of “I won’t do this unless I get this”, embrace the “I’m not sure, but this will add to my learning”. Growth mindset is powerful. #Leadership

One year outcomes of TAVR in young low risk patients make it into @NEJM boasting great outcomes and driving massive change in practice. @JoChikweMD and colleagues show a 220% increase in 6 year mortality for matched patients undergoing TAVR compared to SAVR. #DontDrinktheKoolAid jtcvs.org/article/S0022-…

Congratulations to the phenomenal Dr. Charles Hallman on his retirement! Dr. Hallman spent his entire surgical career at THI/Baylor and we are so lucky to have had the opportunity to train under him. One of our “finest and funnest” surgeons, you will be so missed around here!
