Imagine a bunch of cats randomly leaping into a collection of boxes—each box is like one of the gel beads in an emulsion, and each cat represents a single cell. In the 10x Genomics Chromium system, individual cells are encapsulated inside tiny droplets along with gel beads that carry unique barcodes. Just as each cat ends up in its own box (if it sits, it fits!), each cell is isolated in its droplet, allowing researchers to capture and trace its unique genetic information during analysis. Now, imagine you have a snapshot of all these cats arranged on a map—this is similar to how #UMAP visualizes single-cell data. If the orange cats tend to cluster together while the black and white cats form a separate group, it suggests that they share similar traits or behaviors.
