BREAKING: Live TV turns brutal as Pete Hegseth’s pastor gets dismantled so badly that the room goes completely silent. Douglas Wilson is best known as the white-supremacist-leaning pastor of the bellicose Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Wilson has been criticized for his — ahem — rather unique interpretation of Christian scripture, an interpretation that seems to have missed the entire gist of the fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ, at least as taught by just about every major Christian denomination. This week, Wilson went on Piers Morgan Uncensored to defend himself and his radical take on religion. Suffice it to say that it did not go well. New York Times contributing writer Wajahat Ali was not interested in pleasantries. When Wilson tried to claim that religious leaders should not be attacked for their beliefs, Ali cut straight through it: "I have no problem attacking wolves in sheep's clothing. I have no problem attacking a man who wrote that American slavery was mutually harmonious between the slave master and the slave. That's you." Wilson — who has indeed written that antebellum slavery involved a "mutually beneficial" relationship — did not dispute this. Ali kept going with a litany of Wilson’s heresies. He had no problem attacking a man who proudly wants to abolish the 19th Amendment — the one that gave women the right to vote. No problem attacking a man supporting what he called "an incoherent, unwinnable, illegal war in Iran." No problem attacking the religious leader of Pete Hegseth — "a cosplay crusader" whose military adventures are getting Americans and innocent civilians killed. But Ali’s coup de grâce was this theological gut punch: "I wish you would open up the Bible. I wish you would meet the Jesus that I met when I went to an all-boy Jesuit Catholic high school. The Jesus that took care of the sick, that took care of the poor, that welcomed the immigrant, that welcomed the marginalized. But instead you've used Jesus as a mascot for your white Christian supremacy, your cruelty, your misogyny." Ali closed with a simple suggestion: "Maybe both of you can read the Constitution, read the Bible, and just take a break, pastor. Just take a break." Host Piers Morgan then turned to Wilson for his response. Wilson's comeback — delivered with the apparent confidence of a trained propagandist — was: "Just incidentally, we know that Jesus was not a socialist because he could actually feed people." Then came the silence. Long, deadly, and studio-wide. "Wonderful," Ali said. "Great response." This is the spiritual mentor of the man running America's military. A pastor who defends slavery as harmonious, wants to strip women of voting rights, and whose best theological counterargument is a Fox News-style Jesus joke that landed with the energy of a wet napkin. Pete Hegseth quotes Pulp Fiction. His pastor compares Jesus to Milton Friedman. Active-duty Marines are calling their department the Department of War Crimes. “Wolf in sheep’s clothing,” indeed!
