@DJngKnd @sccarlson @mbird12 I felt satisfied knowing three examiners graded entirely on the work in-hand. I couldn’t rely on an oral defense to shore up something I left out, etc.

In the Australian system where I completed my PhD in 2020, you have a village of people assisting you at various stages. Feeling grateful this morning for all those who helped me survive:
- @mbird12, supervisor, who pushed me, encouraged me, and trolled me relentlessly
- @ScottHarro78904, second supervisor, who always had a timely book recommendation
- Lewis Ayres, external reader, who gave me copious amounts of feedback and wrote the generous foreword to the published version
- @PLeithart, external reader, who pushed me to write more constructively and less defensively
- David Starling, external reader, who gave keen feedback on especially NT portions
- @sccarlson, who helped shape the first outline during my confirmation of candidature
- Alan Thompson, who recommended I pursue a PhD upon passing my entry thesis

@sccarlson @brandon_d_smith @mbird12 But passing your viva is more satisfying in the British than the Australian system; the challenge, the dynamics of a testing conversation, the opportunity to throw everything and the kitchen sink at a candidate and see them rise to the occasion.
English

@brandon_d_smith @mbird12 Compared to the American system, the Australian system is better at getting more scholars to read your work earlier in the process. I think it results in a better product. I'm glad to contribute my little bit.

"The author is particularly concerned to encourage academics to read Scripture with the same rigour used in their academic disciplines."🔎

@Ben_Castaneda1 Dutch Radical Scholarship has always been a guilty pleasure for me but it's completely untenable.

Is it a compliment if someone says about the devotions I published that they are 'unusual'?
"I have greatly enjoyed these unusual and spiritually perceptive devotions for Christian academics. These short chapters are deeply rooted in the careful reading of Scripture and earthed in the author's commitment to encouraging faithfulness in believers ..."

I like it when someone says the obvious on the (chronological) dating of John (and gives me a name drop in the process 😀).
