10. A 1,700-year-old Roman-era "Good Shepherd" gold ring, engraved with a boy holding a sheep — an image symbolizing Jesus in early Christianity. It was found off the coast of Caesarea with a treasure of silver and bronze Roman coins from the mid-third century A.D.

This is not a recent discovery. It was found during an excavation in 2013. The inscription reads: “Akeptous, lover of God, offered the table to God Jesus Christ as a memorial.” Notice the use of the nomina divina (divine names) with an overbar. These abbreviations were common in Christian literature for God, Jesus, the Son, Spirit, etc. Θω Ιυ Χω “to God Jesus Christ” The script is written with Greek capital letters common in inscriptions (and in New Testament manuscripts) of the time. This has been dated to the third century. Check out this article. biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/biblical…

This mosaic is the biggest discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls. The earliest "Jesus is God" declaration from 230 AD — and it's just the start of what we've found. Mega thread of archaeology that supports the New Testament... 🧵

@rhnnnwrrn @IMC_Leeds Expensing retrospectively is a whole other gripe of mine. Because what if I don't have two grand to spend before it gets reimbursed months later?

No-one seems to have paid much attention to @Pontifex's Letter on the Renewal of the Study of Church History from back in November - mainly because it's pretty boring. But he's also not wrong #_ftnref4" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">vatican.va/content/france…

@ConorMcDonough4 Thanks for your generosity in sharing this. I am writing on Aelred and Thomas of Cantimpre’s preached and hagiographical engagement with what today’s psychologists call “spiritual-religious struggles,” reflecting on your work will be deeply helpful. Much appreciated, God bless

I love the earrings from the recently excavated Pompeian bathhouse. Pliny the Elder talks about "crotala", i.e. earrings with pearls that click together when the wearer walks. The sound was #apotropaic, designed to distract (& thus disable) evil spirits! 🧿bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

How do 12 people begin to spontaneously and beautifully sing a 12th-century Latin hymn? They could only do this because they grew up on it. The Halprin parents cultivated all the right loves in their children for a time such as this.
