@NiwaWeather The sudden onset, precip rate, volume and size of hail were really impressive as was the lightning and thunder. Not ideal kiddo drop off conditions, but the pupils got a big kick outta it!

Some impressive hail stones in Riverhead, Auckland this morning from a thunderstorm! ⚡️ @DLorrey reported that the ground briefly turned completely white & that the stones were at least 1 cm across.

Well, I wasn’t expecting a night in Eastbourne A&E after waking up with acute deep pain in my side. Turns out to be a suspected kidney stone. NHS staff have been brilliant. Fortunately it was very quiet at 5am! Got some awesome pain killers and booked in for a CT scan now.

@kate_g_evans Walked a decent length of that stream and also did GPR and passive seismic tomography over the former / current outlet and the surrounds a while back. Really should publish it …

Really neat video by @InspireExplore with George Denton from @UMaine , who discusses early explorer contributions to understanding Antarctica and global climate. I’m forever grateful that George helped me get there as a student. nzaht.org/climate-insigh…

@Heaton_T_J @dr_eleanor_gee Yes, in my experience looking at subfossil kauri, they typically have root plates that are much smaller in diameter that are shallowly seated - with structural “peg roots” that are numerous. That’s why these trees are prone to wind throw. The model doesn’t reflect reality!

I still haven't seen the model kauri. I need to go on an excursion to the biosecurity folks and have a look sometime...

@tgatte @ed_hawkins @Azure @JordiRib1 I’d say yes. Prescribed constraints on the transcription specific to meteorological data could see immediate improvements of 15-20% just by constraining some categories (eg atmospheric pressure). Augmented training libraries would also push it up even more for some methods.

Ever wondered about how much old weather data is not available to scientists? Just in the UK we have around 100 million daily rainfall measurements for the period 1850-1960 sitting in the Archives on hundreds of thousands of sheets of paper. Where is the AI tool to read these?

@tgatte @Azure @JordiRib1 My understanding is that accurately reading tabulated numerical data is a very different challenge from reading hand-written text. But AI is moving so fast that perhaps this is all solved now.

I had a talk to Dr Mike Joy this morning. He’s one of our best-known scientists but found out Monday his role at Victoria University will be dis-established. “Pretty gutting” is how he put it. It’s been a sadly familiar story over the past few years 1/ nzherald.co.nz/nz/pretty-gutt…
