I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything here. I’m not engaging with any instigators. This is just a thought that wandered into my head while I’m laying here on bed rest with far too much time to think. It came to me while listening to Bartender. (Side note: when I was coming out of my coma and intubated my mom put her headset that had Sirius XM over my ears. It was the Friday night live show and the first song that pushed past the fog was Bartender. I could write a short story on what this song did to / for me when breaking through that nightmarish barrier.) I read a lot. Always have. When I come across a line in a book that strikes something deep in me, I tattoo it onto my heart. I’m also a writer, so words matter to me. Probably more than they should. Put those two things together and it’s probably not surprising that my favorite passage in the Bible is the opening of the Gospel of John. “In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God. And the Word was God.” Holy hell. That is almost too heavy of a thought for my mind to carry. The Word existed before anything existed? Before light? Before matter? Before time itself? And somehow the Word was with God while also being God? Not created later or something separate. Just… there? This is where it starts to break the limits of my mind. Because how can something be with God and be God at the same time? How did it exist before nothing was nothing was nothing, past infinity and even another infinity, an infinity of infinities beyond that and triple that forever? It’s a paradox big enough that the verse doesn’t even try to solve it. It just states it and lets the mystery just linger. But laying here another thought started forming behind it as I was listening to Bartender. If the Word existed before everything… before anything was anything… then the music wrapped around words might not be something we invented. It might be something we stumbled into. Something that was already here waiting. The creator itself. So the thought that kept circling my mind was this. If the Word was with God and the Word was God… what does that say about music carried by words? Is music eternal too? With the creator? Is the creator? The conduit that carries it into human hearts in a way logic never could.Because music reaches places inside of me that arguments can’t touch. That’s just a fact. The sung word can crack open my heart that has been locked shut for years. A sung word can make me feel understood in ways plain words never could. It slips past my defenses and lands somewhere deeper. And that also might explain something else. Even songs that sound openly hostile to this concept can still move people. The lyrics might be angry or doubtful or rebellious. Humans have always been good at that part. But the music itself still runs on the same structure of harmony and vibration woven into creation. Even when the message pushes away from a creator, the medium itself may still be pointing back toward something older. Something that traces all the way back to that enormous idea John laid on us. That before anything existed… there was the word, there was song, and we’re able to revel in it, and it is God. The next time you put on a song that opens your heart, remember that it was there before the beginning, was with God. Is God.
