Another Sen. Bettencourt and @ATT sponsored PC giveaway at @stjohnvianney Catholic Church just in time for #Christmas, with special guest Rep. @ManoForTexas! A student without a computer is already behind in today’s world, but many families just got caught up with that! As Rep. DeAyala & “Uncle Paul” partnered with them and @Compudopt at SJV to put laptops directly into the hands of local students and families, so they have the tools they need to keep up in school and in life. Special thanks to Chris at AT&T, Vivian at SJV, and my staff who helped make this giveaway happen. This is the 3rd year AT&T has partnered with St. John Vianney, distributing hundreds of laptops to local families, part of a larger commitment happening across Texas and around the country. Since returning home from a regular and 2 special sessions in Austin, I have visited with at least a dozen community groups.  Those discussions focused largely on the results from the 89th Legislature - both the big wins and the tough losses.  I confess to be a bit of a policy nerd.   My recent visit with the @VillageRepWomen was different. I was asked to speak about “My Why—Why I sought elected office.”  Influenced by my family’s experience and the lense through which I view the limited role of government, my “why” is personal. My parents and oldest brothers escaped Castro’s Communist Cuba over 60 years ago. Months later, my father fought alongside 1,400 of his fellow countrymen with the CIA led Brigade 2506 in the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion to oust the Castro regime. Upon my father’s return, my parents knew the country of their birth was lost and that the US would be our forever home. They embraced this great country, state, and our west Houston community. Growing up, the conversations around our dinner table were different than most of my SBISD peers.  The contrast between the atrocities of communism and the freest and most benevolent country known to man was made abundantly clear.  Our God-given, inalienable rights of individual liberty is the antithesis of post-Castro Cuba. The DeAyala family has been blessed and will be forever grateful to this country and its greatest state. Thank you to @M4LHarris for sharing this. In a large, private group chat, an adult shared publicly screen shots that included student names and specifically the names of two faculty members who were considering sponsoring a Stratford High School chapter of @TPUSA, the organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk.  The only plausible explanation for this behavior was to undermine the club formation and to attempt to intimidate students and faculty.     I first met @charliekirk11 in 2018. He loved debating issues and ideology – with civility.  He built a large platform traveling to campuses across the country and he shared his platform with those who opposed his views, often asking them to come to the front of the line.  We can all learn from Charlie’s style of debate and civil discourse.  Doxing and bullying have no place in SBISD.  We want our kids to respect each other and to not be bullies.  Let’s not just talk about it, let’s teach them by example.  I have reached out to SBISD leadership about these recent events. The district has policies and procedures consistent with Texas law to forming student clubs. I understand that the students are going through these steps. I am hopeful the students at SHS get their club.  And I would be honored to be invited to visit. #hd133

The Legislature has concluded its second special session with some meaningful wins— including stronger protections for youth camps, and I am proud to have Joint-Authored HB 1, the Youth Campers Act, and Co-Sponsored SB 1, Heaven's 27 Camp Safety Act. Special thanks to Rep. Darby and Sen. Perry for their leadership on these bills that provide for:   • Camps to submit comprehensive and vetted emergency plans covering weather and other incidents. • Establishment of muster zones, evacuation routes, and to notify parents of certain risks. • Camps to install emergency alert systems, provide camper safety orientations, and ensure staff receive annual training on emergency procedures.
• Operators to maintain redundant internet connections, monitor real-time weather alerts, and coordinate closely with local emergency management officials.   In Texas, summer camps aren’t just activities—they’re traditions that shape us and become part of our roots. We want Texas camps to thrive for generations, but that includes putting safety first. These reforms set stronger safeguards for our children and give families peace of mind.   We also tackled title fraud, with SB 16, a bill I co-sponsored, which creates new property theft and fraud crimes to prevent requires photo ID for real property filings, directs clerks to alert law enforcement of suspected fraud, and ensures victims receive restitution.   BIG win for Harris County! We passed HB 16  (incorporating my HB 3600 from the regular session), adding FIVE new Harris County civil district courts—the first new such courts since 1985. These courts will reduce the current backlog litigants are facing and allow disputes to be resolved more efficiently and with greater attention. Justice delayed is justice denied.   I’m grateful to my colleagues for the wins we did achieve. And though it is great to be back home, I look forward to picking up where we left off in the 90th Legislature and bringing home more common sense conservative wins that makes Texas even better. Today, the Texas House overwhelmingly passed HB 1—legislation written in honor of the 27 young lives lost at Camp Mystic. This bill ensures that the tragedy of July 4th will never happen again. HB 1 provides: - an emergency and evacuation plan that is professionally vetted and works, and staff fully trained to carry it out, - reliable and redundant communication systems, - Stronger safety standards and clear accountability measures, and - safe location of sleeping cabins. We cannot bring back the precious lives lost, but we can honor them by making sure no family endures this pain again. Four days after the Hill Country flood, we see so many of our friends across Texas stepping up to help the families who are suffering and communities that have been devastated. We see first responders working tirelessly and ribbons of remembrance scattered across our neighborhoods. As much as is being done to help, we can and should be doing what we can to prevent this from ever happening again. Because warnings are lacking or aren’t always seen or heard, we should establish an alert system along the Guadalupe River and elsewhere — like we do with tornado sirens. We must ensure the Texas Hill Country’s river basins and other waterways are equipped with adequate flood gauges and warning systems. I look forward to working on this with my colleagues in the Legislature during the special session later this month. Several have asked how they can help.
