Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell opened today’s packed #QuakeSmart workshop, reminding attendees," #Preparedness in #PoplarBluff is not just a strategy – it’s part of our culture. Given our proximity to the New Madrid Fault, earthquakes must remain top of mind. Unlike tornadoes, their impacts are broad. Our strong relationships are key to planning, response, and recovery. We know today’s #earthquake preparedness workshop will be beneficial to each and every one of you, and we are proud to welcome you to our city."

Glen Granholm, "Sometimes #earthquake #preparedness can be free. One example is to complete a simple hazard hunt. Look around, categorize, and count relevant items, and then establish priorities and a budget for implementation to correct these items." #QuakeSmart @AR_Emergencies

Diane Hughes, Division of Fire Protection Services w/@AR_Emergencies provided an overview of the local building codes and seismic provisions for today's #QuakeSmart attendees. "In Arkansas, structures are assigned seismic design categories based on their location and risk. We have two priorities when it comes to building codes and regulations - protect people and protect property. We are watching out for everyone in the state."

.@strongtie Regional Sales Manager, Josh McIntyre provided an overview of #QuakeSmart STRUCTURE including the importance of completing an evaluation to understand building vulnerability to #earthquakes by assessing structural and nonstructural risk. As a reminder, the evaluation should be completed by a structural engineer or registered design professional to identify weaknesses and design mitigation solutions. @AR_Emergencies

.@Ines_Pearce "Kick start your #QuakeSmart planning and preparedness activities to protect your team before an #earthquake so that your business can stay open or re-open quickly after an event and it is safe. Encourage them to discuss #preparedness with their friends and family. Workplace preparedness and home preparedness are equally important." @AR_Emergencies

Today's #QuakeSmart workshop attendees had the pleasure of hearing from Ken Granata @CityCharleston's Chief Building Official. He reviewed local building codes for residential and commercial buildings, the adoption process, retrofit requirements for existing buildings and more. Eric Vaughn, FLASH EVP followed the presentation with a demo of Inspect2Protect.org, which reflects an engineering analysis of different model building codes and features required for disaster resilience based on address or zip code. @ChasCountyGov @SCEMD @strongtie @Ines_Pearce @SCcommerce @eqconsortium

.@ChasCountyGov Emergency Management Director Justin Pierce opened today's #QuakeSmart workshop stating, "Earthquakes have happened here before, and they will happen again. Here in #Charleston, we often feel small #earthquake tremors, but we know the shaking could be a lot more powerful, and, given the age of our infrastructure we could be in trouble real quick. We are having serious conversations about the investments we need to make to keep our citizens safe, including in building codes and emergency alert systems." @SCEMD @strongtie @Ines_Pearce @ChasChamber @SCcommerce @BBBColaChas @eqconsortium @cofcgeology @CityCharleston @DorchesterCoEMD @SCSafeHome

The #Earthquake Threat to Businesses and Organizations, covered by Dr. Steven Jaume from @cofcgeology reviewed the 2021-2024 #earthquakes in #SouthCarolina and reminded #QuakeSmart attendees that although seismic activity is generally centered under Summerville, it can occur throughout the state. He added, "Local geology like rocks and sediment also matter in ground shaking. And, potential liquefaction damage is just as much a concern as shaking in the Lowcountry. A strong earthquake could happen tomorrow." @ChasCountyGov @SCEMD @strongtie @Ines_Pearce @SCcommerce @eqconsortium @CityCharleston

Spotlight #earthquake #insurance presentation from Brenda Rourke @NAIC Center for Insurance Policy and Research at today's #QuakeSmart workshop in #STL. "Key findings from 2021-2024 top predictors of earthquake insurance uptake = 1) using agents to help make insurance decisions 2) talking to friends and family about earthquakes 3) confidence in having sufficient information about earthquakes 4) cost." Recent study shows that specifically across the @eqconsortium region, about 2/3 of homeowners and 90 percent of renters do not have earthquake insurance. @CityEMA @MoSEMA_ @femaregion7

.@eqconsortium Executive Director Brian Blake educated attendees on how to Drop, Cover, and HoldOn! to protect yourself, colleagues, and family during an #earthquake. He also reminded everyone in #STL, "The central U.S. is earthquake country, and it will not take a big one to cause significant damage in our area. We should all be #QuakeSmart and take steps learned today and to start or complete preparedness activities." @CityEMA @MoSEMA_ @femaregion7
