@cornwall_fraser @rugby_ap They could be privately funded and not have to worry about EQP, IQ, any of that. I’m thinking 2013/14 Toulon vibes. They’d win the champions cup.

@DRoj @rugby_ap No RFU funding though, would they be getting funding from the IRFU. If not could see them attracts some big owners if they can sign anyone. Would there players be eligible to play for England or not as outside the Prem

Rumour that the RFU is allowing London Irish to explore joining the URC (would welcome that, personally). Not sure what the marketing experts say but if they were to brand themselves as ‘London Exiles’ and pitch to both the Irish and S.A. communities, they’d have a tidy fanbase.

@T2Rugby Which wouldn’t have been possible without a 6 figure investment from a public school that no other rugby playing nation in the world could offer.

@DRoj @JHJCSports One moved as a child and grew up and spent his formative years in the country whereas the other moved as an adult of course.

@SamRobertsComms I’ve been called a racist, thick and someone who goes to Tommy Robinson rallies today! 1/3 I suppose.

Really ruffled some feathers with this. One of the replies even suggested I attend Tommy Robinson rallies 😂 The point I was making is: You either accept all of it, or none of it. BJVR is eligible for England according to World Rugby, so he’s in 🤷
Dave Rogers@DRoj

Feyi-Waboso, Roots, Cunningham-South, Marcus Smith, Dylan Hartley was Captain, Shontayne Hape, Mike Catt, Willie Heinz, Ben Te’o, the Vunipolas, Riki Flutey. That’s off the top of my head. Have I missed any? Oh yeah, Kepu Tuipulotu. Feel free to continue the list…

@JHJCSports I think we might largely be making the same point. There are huge shades of grey on this and I’ve been taking pelters from wankers all day, so may have got this one wrong Ultimately, in this instance, the RFU and World Rugby are deciding who is and isn’t English. And that’s ok

@DRoj I said explicitly I don’t want do policing of true Englishman. I think it’s reductive, and is the cover for a lot of racism. See some comments on this thread and others. I’m not going through case by case.

@DRoj Hmm, sounds like what I said? His parents thought that it was best for him to move to England for more opportunities. He was 11, and a couple of school were happy to give him an education

@JHJCSports No. Someone ID’d his talent & he got full scholarship to Harrow Hence why his 2 Welsh international sisters are not eligible for Eng This isn’t having a go at him, or the situation. He’s a great bloke and a brilliant player But just like BJVR, Rugby & Money brought him to Eng

@OldDownbadians I need to completely and absolutely clarify my position here. The point is, there are many, many shades of grey. World Rugby have made it black and white. BJVR is eligible and England have exercised their right to select him You do not know me to make such accusations.

People let their masks slip too easy when this subject comes up. Why is Marcus Smith less English than Sam Underhill? Both were born abroad to an English parent before being raised in England.

Centres James Williams and Joe Jenkins have been talked about for Wales honours. I think Joe Jenkins at 13 has more of a shot for it and could play regularly next season at Leicester

@London__Smoke All of this is subjective. And absolutely Your right to feel that way. But the objective fact is, the team has the right to pick him and he has the right to play.

@DRoj Yeah. I don't like it though. I think it's a bit of an insult to the player, players and the shirt. Leave it for Ireland or Scotland. I think it is black and white. Like he has no connection to England but his postcode. He's not even the best centre we could pick either.

@London__Smoke Oh. Totally. The whole is (that I absolutely didn’t explain) There are shades of grey and world rugby have tried to make it black and white. So BJVR is in,

@DRoj I do think there is a bit of a difference between those who qualify on ancestry and those on residency alone. A fair number of those are English by birth not adoption, and that is a different thing to a project player.

@DRoj Rugby is a niche sport in most nations that play it. This rule was brought in, many years ago, to help sustain the game in the long term. I think the rule is working well.

@Sam345665387962 It’s all interesting stuff. One conversation that’s never had is that a parents’ decision is taken into account on behalf of a child, as opposed to an adult who has been able to use their agency and free will to make a decision.

@DRoj I don't really like residency but it should accommodate e.g. people who have come over and spent a large chunk of their lives here and committed to the country Your parent/s being from a country should clearly and obviously qualify you You're conflating the two

@DRoj I don't agree, there is a massive difference between a 13yr old immigrant growing up to play for his adopted country and being a senior player in your 20s signing with intention to play INT rugby. I'm not fussed, the rules are the rules play to them or change them
