@BharatRamamurti These are good ideas. I worry that if we don't get ahead of this, people will turn on AI the way they turned on trade. The tough part is bringing stakeholders together.

The biggest economic issue that no one is talking about: AI is projected to replace 12 million jobs in the next decade. Americans say they're worried about it. But no national politician has a plan for it. A new piece with some ideas, from me, Zoe Jacobs, and Diego Haro. 1/

The American Dream? It’s the peace of mind coming from your children being well fed, educated, healthy, and housed. Taking health care away from millions, denying children food at school, ignoring the housiing crisis, and rewarding polluters sets the dream back. Let"s do better.

@neeratanden @AJentleson This was a tough call. The leader had to make it. He argues it is a strategic retreat to buy time for the President's position to weaken as the year passes. I can't say with certainty that it was the correct decision. But turning on each other is not the right response.

What I'm really known for is playing to the twitter left. Is that a joke? I'm having a discussion of facts and assumptions that are at play. This is not about playing to a crowd, much as you'd like to make it that. It's about the best strategy to stop Trump. And weirdly I don't think it's cooperation

@DKThomp @Tyler_A_Harper On the left, the opposition to H-1B (and guestworker programs in general) is exposure to abuse and an inability to integrate. Permanent visas remove much of that meaning those workers are less likely to put downward pressure on working conditions for Americans.

As a general rule of thumb, when corporate leaders who reap massive financial benefits from a given policy tell you that said policy also just happens to be The Right Thing To Do, they’re lying.
Sen. Bernie Sanders@SenSanders

Elon Musk is wrong. The main function of the H-1B visa program is not to hire “the best and the brightest,” but rather to replace good-paying American jobs with low-wage indentured servants from abroad. The cheaper the labor they hire, the more money the billionaires make.

Perhaps, but rules of thumb aren't very useful on immigration. Old-school socialists oppose liberalized immigration. But so do neo-Nazis. And "don't be on the side of neo-Nazis" is also a good rule of thumb. So now we're stuck! I think creating legal pathways for immigrants is complicated and hard, and H-1Bs are a useful if flawed tool that, all things equal, should probably be expanded bc the alternative is forcing a lot of v smart foreign-born people—who want to live, work, and start a family in the US—to leave the country, where we don't get their ingenuity (or their taxes). I don't think "Elon Musk also likes this" is a good enough reason to oppose expanding high-skill immigration.

I was on Julie Mason yesterday talking about Trump’s deportation plans and why the parties will have to come back together and try to fix an immigration system that simply is not working for anyone. — siriusxm.com/clips/clip/fb8…

@DKThomp If he had won 60+ seats in the Senate and a wide majority in the House, then he would have a mandate, meaning he could do whatever he wants without fear of obstruction. He does not have that.

The last 24 years of close elections and thermostatic turnover have been defined by outside parties claiming the system is broken, getting elected, becoming The System, and then being vulnerable to the same genre of accusation that brought them to power Mandate is a vibe. It's a feeling. It exists in our heads. Looking at election results to glean "mandate"ness is ouija board nonsense. x.com/baltrosei/stat…

What's the origin of the news media's obsession w/ whether the president "has" a "mandate"? The office's power is not derived from the media's interpretation of whether the size of his victory grants constitutional powers under the mandate clause of Article 10 Section Z

@AJentleson @Leah_Abrams There is a place for activism and a place for governing. I have done both and they are different in both responsibilities and actions. Activism is necessary to push the envelope of what's possible as far as possible. Governing is deciding where that is.

@Leah_Abrams Of course I remember you, Leah. It seems like you wanted to do activism, not electoral politics, which of course is an entirely reasonable choice if that's what makes sense for you. But they are two different things.

@HalSinger @matthewstoller FTC Chair Kahn has done a great job. The VP however, if she becomes President, has the right to name anyone she wants to Chair the FTC. Donors don't speak for her and she doesn't seem prone to being bullied by anyone. Progressives have foes, VP Harris isn't one of them.

@matthewstoller @DSepDC And here I was, frantically Googling prior popular officials who were attacked by billionaire donors, some of whom owned companies under investigation by the official’s agency. Context matters, even if your condition wasn’t satisfied.

@HalSinger Name any preemptive naming of an executive official announced before the President has won an election, just one and I will let it go. It would set terrible precedent.

@DSepDC In the absence of a sustained attack campaign on Lina Khan by donors, it might make sense to stay silent on appointments. But this attack warranted to a response, assuming she wants to appeal to progressives as much as billionaires. It's malpractice in my book.
