This is a tidy little mistake dressed up as intellectual courage: confusing the limits of a tool with the limits of reality. Science is a method, not a metaphysics. It tells us how things behave under measurement, not why anything exists at all, not why laws are law-like, not why mathematics—those pristine, bloodless abstractions—map the universe with such obscene accuracy. Declaring God false because a spectrometer can’t detect Him is like declaring Shakespeare false because he doesn’t show up on a balance sheet. The appeal to authority here is especially rich. A physicist—brilliant, no doubt—speaks outside his domain, and suddenly a philosophical claim is smuggled in wearing a lab coat. Dirac could derive equations of exquisite beauty, but beauty itself is not an empirical quantity, and neither is meaning. The moment you assert that only what science can verify is real, you have already abandoned science and entered philosophy—bad philosophy, at that. As for “human imagination,” that charge cuts both ways. Mathematics is a product of the human imagination too, yet the universe seems distressingly obedient to it. Moral law, logical necessity, consciousness, intentionality—none of these are reducible to test tubes and timers, yet we live by them daily without demanding peer review. Religion, at its serious end, is not a competing physics engine. It is an account of being, value, obligation, and purpose—questions science is structurally incapable of answering. To dismiss it as “false assertions” is not honesty; it’s category confusion with a superiority complex. The real irony is this: claiming that only material explanations are valid is itself an unprovable belief, held with religious fervour, defended by ritual incantations like “basis in reality,” and enforced by social applause. One god has been rejected, only to be replaced by a smaller one—thin, fragile, and allergic to questions it cannot quantify. That isn’t science winning. It’s humility losing.
