The federal government has deployed heavily armed forces to three frontline districts amid concerns over possible anti-government mobilization ahead of May 15,when president's term is set to expire. Footage shows a significant heavy weaponry deployment to Gubadley district.

According to credible sources,Gubaley,Kahda and Deynile districts have been identified as primary target areas for the deployment. Meanwhile,the opposition is set to hold a conference to discuss the expiry of the federal government's mandate and the upcoming elections.

Somalia’s federal member state elections are proceeding on a timetable that should concern anyone who takes elections seriously. On 6 April 2026, the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission set Southwest State to vote on 28 April, leaving 22 days between announcement and polling. On 16 April, Galmudug and Hirshabelle were assigned 13 May, allowing 27 days. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems recommends 18 to 24 months of operational planning for credible elections in complex environments. Somalia is not complex in the conventional sense. It is fractured, shaped by competing constitutional claims and active insurgency, where the gap between a declared election and a legitimate one has rarely been wider. The Türkiye–Somalia hydrocarbons agreement raises an important question. In a federal system, agreements of this scale must be visibly owned across the system. Without that, the issue is not only the deal, but whether it carries national legitimacy. A national resource agreement is not judged only by its terms, but by its ownership. If the Türkiye–Somalia hydrocarbons agreement is not broadly understood and accepted, it risks becoming a legal framework without political foundation. Transparency is not optional. It is necessary. It is concerning that many Somalis learned of key aspects of the agreement through external communication rather than their own national channels.
