@manofsteeele Huge chunks of the Gospels are written in a style that uses Classical Biblical Hebrew syntax as a model. I think it’s highly unlikely that anyone spoke Greek that way (ever).

It’s hard to believe anyone actually spoke Koine Greek because of how mathematical it seems to be. Like, surely this is a language that could only be written and broken down slowly.

@nickycantaloupe On the flipside, you have professional Catholic apologists who think (or at least speak as if) all Protestants are Evangelicals. And keep perpetuating that misunderstanding.

If you want Catholics to stop the polemics of saying “Protestants don’t even know what we believe,” then educate your fellow Protestants and make the statement less true. We’re all in an internet bubble. Many people in all churches don’t even know what their own church teaches!

Listen to me carefully: the internet is not real life. Offline the only Protestants I have known are megachurch bapticostals and liberal mainliners. And these people almost never understand Catholicism. I don’t think I’ve ever met a studious “classical Protestant” in the wild.

Conservative contempt for academia, beyond being indicative of an inability to read above a 3rd grade level, genuinely stems from the growing sentiment that universities should be replaced by glorified trade schools that pump out business, engineering, and comp sci graduates

Since there is some confusion about the nature of my research, here is the abstract for my PhD thesis, which I hope will provide more context for anyone interested in learning more about my work!

ESV has an extremely annoying tendency to “interpret” instead of translating. I just ran into this in Ecclesiastes of all places. If the verse is confusing, let it be confusing; I don’t want translators to take personal liberties in clarifying. This is what study Bibles are for.

In the Presbyterian Church in America, when you try to address the spiritual abuse of your pastor, you're required to jump through infinite hoops of church processes that are practically inaccessible to a lay person, and if you get one step wrong, you've lost your chance at justice. If you talk about your case in any way, you're labelled as causing division and lose your chance in the church courts. If your life isn't sparklingly pristine for the often years-long process of the church courts, they look down on you and question your complaints and concerns. They expect you to not only wait for months to years on end, but they also expect you to be the one who repeatedly follows up with every single possible point of a bottleneck. But then they turn around and demand that you provide responses to them in tight turnarounds. If your abusive pastor switches presbyteries, good luck with trying to find the right people from his new presbytery to file the complaint. If he leaves the denomination during your long time of waiting, that's too bad for you. The Presbyterian Church in America isn't a broken system; it's a system that is designed to (and succeeds at) protecting pastors from lay people. Practically every single person I've known who has gone through the process of the church courts has deeply regretted the amount of time and effort they put in that resulted in extremely shoddy work by the denomination. Abusive pastors get away with evil and they keep getting away with it. The amount of people who tell me their stories is terrifying and maddening, especially when several of these pastors are high profile names.

It's actually good (and perhaps even healthy) to not entirely toe the line within the Christian tradition you are a part of. It is dangerous for any Christian tradition to simply fall back on "This is the way we've always done it as [insert tradition]." There will always be peer pressure to just conform, keep your head down, and not ask questions. But, to speak up, ask hard questions, and rethink issues within community fosters theological health.
