There are a couple of possible responses that are plausible. It’s still a free choice whether people want the Roman Church to shape their conscience and ethics. And if the Church acts irresponsibly or is derelict and doesn’t present rational thinking based on a clear Christian ethic then again people should call out the Church for its irresponsibility. This has been true especially when it concerns scandalous sexual abuse cases and how Catholicism in its current activity is viewed by many as promoting illegal migration leading to horrific crimes and failure to work with government officials on this topic.
