Exactly they outsourced their security to US and spend that money on building a welfare state. Now these countries will not only have to increase their own defence spending but also cannot cut welfare spending... otherwise they would be voted out of power. Massive fiscal impulse incoming from Europe.
Michael A. Arouet@MichaelAArouet

Scott Bessent brought up an eye-opening datapoint recently. Since 1980, the US has spent $22 trillion more on defense than all other NATO members combined. They preferred to ramp up welfare instead. That’s about two-thirds of outstanding US debt. What will Europe choose now?

The Houthis joined the war today by attacking Israel. For background on the Iran-Houthi relationship (evolution, nature of Iran's support, dynamics between the two, consequences), see my article "How War in Yemen Transformed the Iran-Houthi Partnership": tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

The obvious Hormuz trade is oil. The less obvious one is sulfur moving through #uranium. ~24% of global sulfur comes from Gulf producers. ~50% of seaborne sulfur moves through Hormuz. China sulfur prices already hit record highs. Kazatomprom already flagged acid shortages once.

AI has killed Bitcoin forever. It became Bitcoin mining’s biggest competitor. Not another crypto. AI. Because both industries compete for the same thing: electricity. And right now, AI is willing to pay much more for it. Bitcoin mining revenue per MW: $57 – $129 AI data center revenue per MW: $200 – $500 Same electricity. But up to 8x more profitable. That’s why miners are starting to pivot. Core Scientific signed a massive AI hosting deal. Hut 8 signed a $7B AI infrastructure agreement. Cipher Mining cut its hashrate 51% to focus on AI compute. So a new question is emerging: If AI becomes the highest bidder for electricity, what happens to Bitcoin? In my new video, I break down: • Why miners are switching • What it means for hash rate • And the two scenarios that could play out for Bitcoin [link in comments]

Germany used to get about 30% of their electricity from nuclear power plants. They just finished blowing up all of their nuclear power plants (with decades of useful life remaining) because of ridiculous govt energy policies. Now the EU wants to rebuild nuclear power. 🤡
