Exactly they outsourced their security to US and spend that money on building a welfare state. Now these countries will not only have to increase their own defence spending but also cannot cut welfare spending... otherwise they would be voted out of power. The obvious Hormuz trade is oil. The less obvious one is sulfur moving through #uranium. ~24% of global sulfur comes from Gulf producers. ~50% of seaborne sulfur moves through Hormuz. China sulfur prices already hit record highs. Kazatomprom already flagged acid shortages once.
