Proof that Xbox doesn't need Playstation. Their games are available on multiple devices in the Xbox Ecosystem. Playstation ports can wait 3-5 years.
Rhys Elliott@superhys

Here's some Xbox games that sold over 100K copies on PlayStation (@alineaanalytics estimates). Thirteen first-party Xbox titles have now cleared the 100K unit milestone on PlayStation. Collectively, they’ve generated $667M in gross revenue for Microsoft, as per our estimates. This analysis doesn’t include Call of Duty. We’ve also excluded titles from acquired studios that were released on PlayStation before Microsoft’s ownership, as well as legacy contractual obligations like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. We dive into the list deeper over on our free Substack (link in bio!), but here's a couple of highlights: - Forza Horizon 5, which launched on PS5 last year, three-and-a-half years after the Xbox/PC versions, accounts for almost half of those revenues. That’s $323M via 5.8M copies sold - Sea of Thieves is also doing well on PlayStation. As one of the first titles in the initial porting strategy, it has moved 2.7M copies on the platform and generated nearly $100M there. It's also shown shown impressive long-term retention, bringing in 300K monthly active users (MAUs) on PS5 - Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has moved 537K units on PlayStation 5, generating $37M in revenue roughly one year after its launch. Released on Sony’s hardware just four months after its Xbox debut, the title has already outsold its Steam counterpart. - Meanwhile, Ninja Gaiden 4 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have both surpassed 250K units on PS5, with each title nearing $20M in PS5 gross revenue, while Starfield sales have continued to trickle in after its tepid PS5 launch a couple of weeks back, now passing 200K. Full analysis over on Substack (link in bio)

According to Circana's first quarter 2026 consumer survey, the #1 reason people play on a console is because of exclusive games. The #2 reason is because friends & family use the same console. youtube.com/watch?v=nvVoYY…

For the past few months, I've pushed harder for the Xbox brand to be better than ever before. I'm not perfect, but I always wanted to ensure that no one could ever say I didn’t raise my voice strongly once again during this important phase. I'm ready for what should be next.

I don't see how Xbox console sales improve if you only make the smaller games exclusive, and the big blockbusters timed. That makes absolutely no sense. No one will buy a Series X or Helix if they know that the big blockbusters will end up on PlayStation and Nintendo. We want Xbox to repair the brand damage, not destroy it any further. They need to protect their IPs, and ensure that both big and small first party titles are permanently exclusive to Xbox. They are in a much stronger position to do so with the amount of IPs and studios that they now own. They just need to be willing to be more aggressive about it, and not be timid about flexing in order to avoid any blowback from a loud minority within the press and online. We also have to remember that console sales were also declining after they started the day and date on PC initiative back in 2016. So if any timed exclusivity strategy is entertained, it should be between Xbox and PC. A similar approach that PlayStation took would be the best way to still drive consumers to buy the console if they know they have to wait a full year before a game is available on PC. That way they still get their PC revenue, grow the Xbox platform much more with higher console sales, and provide their devs with a more focused and dedicated development cycle on the high priority SKU(being the console).

I can see smaller titles like a Keeper being full exclusive but the bigger titles like Forza Horizon 6 will be timed at best **too much $$$ to ignore** The real question IMO is the next Halo as it is the franchise that defines Xbox so do you keep it to Xbox and PC only or do you move forward with it being on PlayStation?

Let's predict: Will Xbox return to "exclusive" games? Will Halo etc. continue to hit PlayStation? READ: windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/le… 👇 "There's an argument to be made that if Xbox isn't finding new users from the Gen-Z and Alpha cohorts due to Roblox, etc, then it needs to find new money elsewhere, i.e. on PlayStation. But I find that to be reductive. If there's an industry problem all up with console, I don't see why putting games on PlayStation is doing anything other than accelerating the identified problem. But again, it's a real dilemma ultimately. Microsoft has pushed themselves into a corner by leaning into these trends, and it makes you wonder if its studios can even get the investment they need without PlayStation's install base now." You’re seriously equating consoles to TVs that play identical video streams? That's a false equivalence that proves why game exclusives are healthy competition, not gatekeeping. Even Netflix has exclusive content that isn't on Disney+, Prime or Youtube. So you happily juggle streaming services for that content and call that pro-consumer, right? Why is buying the right console for the games you want suddenly anti-consumer after 40 years of that being the industry standard? Saying that I'm excited by the prospect of other people not being able to play some games on their preferred box of choice is a weak strawman. I'm not here popping champagne because someone misses a game. What I and millions of others are hyped by are platform defining moments that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Halo launching Xbox, God of War dominating PlayStation, Breath of the Wild making the Switch a must have. That's what makes console gaming pop-culture events, not boring commodity hardware. Devs target the lowest common denominator for multiplat ports. We’ve seen it. You get sameness, not more games for everyone. If every game is instantly on one box, the industry loses the competition that drives innovation, bigger budgets, and eventually lower prices through real pressure. You want the illusion of convenience at the cost of platform identity. That's the position that kills excitement, not the one defending exclusives. History, sales data, and basic economics are on the side of healthy platform rivalry. Not the fantasy that games should work exactly like Netflix. Consumers vote with their wallets for the differentiation, not your one box utopia.

@DandyGuy15 @Nick_Marseil You think it'd be more competitive and exciting if Sony had Netflix, Samsung had Disney, and LG had YouTube? No one else could use those platforms because they bought the wrong TV? If you aren't excited by games, but you are by other people not being able to play, thats you.

Xbox is reevaluating exclusives because that's the feedback consumers gave them. You don't know nor give a fuck about what consumers want. All you care about is your yellow and purple thumbnails with vague af titles to clickbait with.
Alex@OhNoItsAlexx

Exclusivity in games is by design anti-consumer It’s simply a way to coerce you into spending more money on systems that are made by the same manufacturer and have practically the same components Y’all fell for the most low-tier psyop and it’s embarrassing

Buying one box sounds nice until it means every game is a watered down port optimized for the weakest link. Movies and music are passive, linear media that's dirt-cheap to distribute digitally with minimal hardware demands. Games are interactive software engineered to the specs of specific hardware for maximum performance, immersion, and features. Consoles are not TVs or generic appliances. They have always been part of the cultural touch point just as much as the games themselves have been. That's the differentiation. Console gaming has always been part of pop- culture, making it more fun and exciting. Exclusive franchises for each brand have always driven that excitement and hype. Ignoring that ignores history. What you want is for the industry to be more like a boring consumer electronics business akin to the TV manufacturer industry. That's not exciting, nor does it breed any high level of competition.

@DandyGuy15 @Nick_Marseil Calling it selfish is just being honest. They wouldn't thats just fearmongering. "It risks turning consoles into dumb streaming boxes with zero soul" wtf have you been smoking :') Nah, it isn't selfish to want games to work like movies and music, where you can buy one box.

Calling it selfish ignores how the market actually works. Gamers who want exclusives are voting with their wallets for choice between ecosystems. If the majority truly hated exclusives, Sony and Nintendo wouldn't be printing money off them. Without them, consoles would become identical commodity boxes running the same games with no real differentiation. A healthy gaming imdustry needs platform identity. Killing exclusives doesn't make things fairer or cheaper long-term. It risks turning consoles into dumb streaming boxes with zero soul. Wanting that differentiation back is pro-industry, not selfish. The loudest voices against it are usually the ones who just want everything handed to them on one device. That's the selfish and entitled position.

Calling console exclusives anti-consumer because they create a hardware paywall is peak hypocrisy when PC gaming has the steepest hardware paywall in the entire industry. If buying specific hardware to play a game is coercion and a psyop, then PC gaming is objectively more anti-consumer by every dollar metric you’re pretending to care about. Yet that never seems to bother the PC master race crowd. Funny how the outrage only appears when the cheaper, more accessible option is the one people actually choose. Exclusive games simply give people a reason to pick one ecosystem over another. The hardware historically has been the affordable entry ticket. Pretending otherwise while ignoring PC’s far higher barrier just exposes the selective outrage.

Hahahahahahhaahhahahahahahahah I remember trying to tell people how exclusives are important to the console ecosystem, and people said it was anti consumer. Within the same year, both Sony and Microsoft have gone back to focusing on exclusivity. I wonder why.

Focusing on daily active players as the new metric doesn't kill exclusivity. It actually requires smart, strategic exclusivity to work long-term. They wouldn't be talking course correction if full multiplat was already maximizing on daily active players and platform health. Again, Sony and Nintendo prove the model every generation. Exclusives build massive, highly engaged player bases with strong attach rates and platform loyalty. Xbox had success with that strategy before the pivot a few years ago. Saying the ship has sailed is simply defeatist. The memo is a direct acknowledgment that the current path isn't delivering. Time will tell, but doubling down on more multiplat while hoping daily active players magically grows the platform isn't bold. It's the status quo that led to the reevaluation in the first place.

@DandyGuy15 @WorstBryFar @klobrille The bigger takeaway from Asha’s post is their core focus on daily active players. You aren’t going to help that goal by going exclusive again- that ship has sailed. That says a lot more than a throwaway line of “re evaluating” their approach to exclusivity.

Small games? Starfield, Doom, AOE, Ninja Gaiden 4? Those are small games to you? These are the majority of their first party games that performed well on Xbox and PC prior to be ported, as well as titles that performed better on Xbox and PC than they did on day one PlayStation ports. I already mentioned earlier that keeping games like COD and Minecraft multiplatform make sense, because that extra revenue helps fund the entire ship. Porting core franchises that define the brand, in addition to blockbusters like Elder Scrolls 6(franchise already has a history of being exclusive on Xbox and PC)that have the ability to elevate brand even further kills platform relevance. Hence why we're seeing the course correction in real-time.

@DandyGuy15 @WorstBryFar @klobrille You’ve cherry picked small franchises/ games not received overally well. Most of those titles didn’t sell that well on Xbox either. You don’t think Halo, gears, ES6 Fable and the next forza are going to do massive numbers on Playstation? You’re dreaming.

@DandyGuy15 @WorstBryFar @klobrille With all due respect, you’re wrong. Xbox has been setting all time revenue records for the business in recent years as they have been going more and more multiplat. They aren’t about to significantly cut their revenue base to try chase the (low margin) console market.
