@mercoglianos Step 1) let Iran sell to anyone, keeping prices lower 2) since the war can take longer, take away the stuff the IRGC spends its money on 3) ??? 4) strait of Hormuz opens

Is the US commitment to keeping Hormuz open credible any more? If the US fails to reopen it by force, the premise of the Carter Doctrine will look pretty hollow. States that depend on access to Gulf products will become very wary of maintaining that dependence. If Russia-Ukraine caused a shift in the global supply chain, expect another one once this war is over.

@gbrew24 What would it take for the US to disprove the Hormuz weapon, presuming the WH doesn't want to deescalate?

The damage has been done. The Islamic Republic will not collapse. And it will likely exit this conflict emboldened--having proven it can take the global economy hostage. The security of the Persian Gulf--the foundation of the GCC's prosperity and dreams for the future--has been weakened, perhaps permanently.

There's only one real road to de-escalation, and it runs through the Oval Office. Iran is not going to back down--their entire strategy is predicated on this. Israel will keep going until they are told to stop. This is Trump's call. When he wants it to end, it will end.

@DastDn @varadmehta A lot of this analysis seems correct, but one thing is missing: whether Iran comes out of this showing that it can use Hormuz to confront the US and the entire region, and extort the world while selling its own oil. In effect, Iran will have tested and proven a powerful weapon.

People assume oil shocks are bad. But is that true for the US? After all, we are net exporters. This week's newsletter works through some simple models and calculations economicforces.xyz/p/are-oil-pric…

@JTAlexander_ @CarlEmpAmerica Lmk how I can save the country with my student loans other than by paying it off and giving the government massive interest on it

@CarlEmpAmerica And? Do you think the need to save the country ends just because Trump is no longer President?

@teortaxesTex I mean, on the eschatological angle you're free to check out Iran's view on this stuff, but more importantly on escalation Iran was increasingly arming proxies and turning them into militaries with pretty serious arsenals. People just wanted to ignore or accept it.

@DanielDayJewish > a nuclear umbrella protecting a conventional weapon (at best) destruction of Israel (mostly via proxy) desert capeshit nobody is more interested in eschatological escalation than Israel which is why Israel is not allowing anyone else in the region to have a nuclear umbrella

Ironically, Israel might have *created* a genuine existential threat. Normally, states can be trusted with nukes – rational actors fear MAD. But it's clear that Israel is committed to keep killing the Islamic Republic leaders. One of them might choose a flashier martyrdom.

@teortaxesTex (I agree though that when Iran's more directly attacked and its other options are taken away, if it survives it'll be more likely to actually detonate a nuke)

@teortaxesTex Maybe but still seems like a lower likelihood of this than of what Iran wanted set up: a nuclear umbrella protecting a conventional weapon (at best) destruction of Israel (mostly via proxy) with essentially the same result and with more likelihood of more details along the way

@davidharsanyi The shame and embarrassment of unquestioningly believing the tweets of antisemites ("broken clock is right twice a day! This Nazi gets me noticing things!") is totally gone despite them mostly being online for boosting their reputations

@davidharsanyi As much as a lot of these journos try to posture as professional and maybe even conservative or liberal, far too many are clearly going to just read one tweet by a bozo online (even one they'd normally call fascist or commie!) and use that as the foundation of their reporting

It's virtually impossible to keep debunking all the fake, out-of-context quotes and slop. Rubio's quote last week was picked up by a bunch of ostensibly responsible pundits. Used in headlines, etc. The same is almost surely going to happen with Netanyahu's Durant quote.

@baytifirasik @nikicaga That's an interesting line of thinking, Amira. Sounds like the state of Israel will fight for what does not belong to it until its obliteration, if needs be. I'm against killing of people, so I'd prefer a full trade embargo imposed by the UN and suspension of Israel from the UN.

Not only are AP exam grades inflating, but so is the money that the College Board makes off of the program ... largely from state and local government contracts. jamesgmartin.center/2026/02/advanc…
