In Rome taking an amazing ⁦@ridedott⁩ e-bike ride down Via dei Fori Imperiali at dusk with ⁦@KarenParolek⁩. Open only to buses and taxis. Roman Forum on left. Trajan’s Markets on right. Wavy cobbles part of the experience. ⁦ @ryanmjohnson

The Business Journals spoke with the developer who coined the term "missing-middle housing" about the evolution of the building concept, obstacles to getting more of the housing built and the role city officials play in the process. bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/n…

@djjmilner It is was pleasure to design a place when the car is not driving any design decisions! Look at the possibilities. There was a larger project with 4+ story parking garages entitled for this site.

@Camp4 Love this thread! As the design lead for Culdesac Tempe, I would be happy to share insights. This community will be fairly self-sustaining, but not to the extent that you are framing in this post.

I have a dream... ...and Midjourney says it looks like this. There’s a perfect storm of opportunity for a moonshot in housing: 1) Home affordability in major metros is out of control 2) There are 40 million remote workers in the US with "portable" income equal to the GDP of Australia. (📍Think about that for a moment—a group of like-minded remote workers has the power to pick a spot on a map and create a local economy from nothing.) 3) There's a growing desire for a simpler, healthier lifestyle & sense of community. 🌊Why not build a new kind of village that surfs these mega-trends? —Inspiring location with great weather, world-class outdoor access, & a regional airport within a 90 min drive (the western slope of Colorado comes to mind) —Beautifully designed, right-sized homes for $500k (no mansions or keeping up with the Joneses) interspersed with… —Affordable (even subsidized) multi-family rental housing for service workers, young & lower-income people, and owners of… —A curated collection of restaurants & shops (individually owned by residents) —Walk & bike only inside the village —Lightning fast internet and co-working space —Hybrid private/home/online school (teachers are residents) This would be the real deal—not a Disney-esque “new urbanism” development in the burbs. The best of old-world Europe meets the best of modern America. Think Telluride or Alys Beach without traffic or tourists. It’s a big, audacious idea but only 1% as audacious as projects already underway in Saudi Arabia (e.g. The Line). I believe there’s huge pent-up demand for this. Heck, I'd leave my beloved Boulder to be part of it. Who’s in? (Share this and let's see how much interest there is.🚀)

@davegordon14 @Camp4 Two issues I have with these examples: 1. There is not enough population density in most of these examples to support local commercial/retail; and, 2. Fewer and fewer people can afford or want a single family detached home, event on smaller lots.

@Camp4 Love it. This is right in-line with what we’ve envisioned for Blackwood Groves in Bozeman. A 120-acre community with all neighborhoods connected via linear parks/paseos to a Village Square with skating rink, restaurants, hotel, etc. Huge variety of housing types and price points.

@davegordon14 Yes to larger living space. Trade some of the inefficient master bath space for more closet/storage space.

Looking to incorporate a more family oriented 3bd plan in a new project we’re working on. Lots of room for improvement and would love some ideas from the floor plan mafia 😀

@ryanmjohnson @ridedott Yes, but just as important is the idea of thoughtful, well designed deflected vistas that make a walking or biking experiences more enjoyable and add a sense of discovery when experiencimg a place!

Logical thinking: Urban places require smaller service/emergency/garbage vehicles Typical U.S.city thinking: Let’s compromise our built environment by planning to accommodate large service/emergency/garbage vehicles

I spotted this scary duplex with an even scarier rear ADU on my way to meeting in #oakland today. Sure glad our zoning made this illegal. Clearly not compatible with neighborhood. #makemissingmiddlehousinglegal 🧐
