@TheRunAmoker @marceelias The problem is WaPo doesn't seem to have an even standard when weighing in on these issues. The same WaPo Editorial Board crying about the alleged unfairness of Virginia's new map was perfectly fine with the Texas gerrymander last year...

@marceelias WaPo is 100 percent right. I agree Texas was WRONG when it pulled its gerrymandering stunt last year and that Republicans brought it on themselves. But it's wrong for the party in power to castrate the other party to deny them represenatation in Congress.

Virginia tonight proved one thing: When Democrats can’t win fairly, they change the rules. That’s not democracy. That’s a power grab. Shameful.

Reporter: What do you make of Republicans saying that Virginia— AOC: Wah wah wah. We have asked Republicans for 10 years to ban partisan gerrymandering. And for 10 years, Republicans have said no. Republicans have fought for partisan gerrymanders across the United States of America. And these are the rules that they have set. And so if the Republican Party wanted to start this, they did this in North Carolina. They drew out three Democratic members of Congress in North Carolina. They did it in Texas. What they’re just mad at is that they have been accustomed to a Democratic Party that rolls over, doesn’t fight, and takes everything sitting down. And what they’re mad at right now is that we are here in a new day. And we have been asking the Democratic Party to stand up and fight, and now they did—and now the Republican Party doesn’t like the fact that they are fighting against someone who actually will stand up for the American people. So if Republicans decide that they would like to revisit a ban on partisan gerrymandering, I welcome them. We have the bill right here to end this all today. But they don’t want to, because they like pursuing and continuing to enact an unfair electoral landscape. And so we have an obligation to defend ourselves.

@CodyTidwell16 @crunchytaters @MeidasTouch You do know the two states with the most undocumented immigrants after California are Texas and Florida, right? And that nearly half of all undocumented immigrants in the entire country are in those three states? CA: 2.3M, TX: 2.1M, FL: 1.6M.

@crunchytaters @MeidasTouch This is true. But also illegal aliens shouldn't be counted in the census. We are literally giving more seats to states who encourage ppl who aren't citizens in both dem and gop states just to get more seats. Ppl who aren't citizens should not count

BREAKING: A Republican-appointed Virginia judge has struck down the Democratic-backed redistricting amendment in full, ruling it unconstitutional and “void from the start.” All votes from the April 21 special election are now invalid, and the state is permanently blocked from using or implementing the new maps. AG Jay Jones says he will immediately file an appeal.

@crunchytaters @MeidasTouch Agreed. But until that day comes, Democrats have every right to respond to GOP gerrymandering efforts with gerrymandering efforts of their own. They shouldn't be expected to unilaterally disarm.

@MeidasTouch Gerrymandering sucks and this back and forth when one side does it and the other hates it and vice versa is nonsense. Redistricting should only be done by an impartial third party based on census results. It should not be a political weapon for either side to yield.

@MeidasTouch It's gonna get overturned on appeal. The VA state supreme court has already rejected previous attempts to stop the redistricting effort.

@MattZeitlin Yeah, but... that's literally what happened. The referendum to redraw the California maps was entirely contingent on Texas following through with their gerrymander. Had Texas backed down, California would not have redrawn their maps.

Redistricting is fun because everyone just reverts to their partisan hack base mode, even people who are fair minded about everything else will be saying nonsense about how the other side “did it first”

@CaseyMattox_ @rquig22 @Josh_PlainTalk They should decide whatever they think works best for them. If a majority of Virginians want to maintain the status quo for amending the state constitution, then that is their decision to make.

Among many other things, it is absurd that a 50% +1 vote can amend the Virginia Constitution.

@CaseyMattox_ You know what's even more absurd? The Texas and Missouri state legislatures implementing ridiculous GOP gerrymanders without giving their state's voters any say whatsoever. At least with CA and VA the voters got the final say.

@Aesop_NPV @jbarro In 2024, ~40% of Missourians voted for Kamala Harris and Democratic candidates for the U.S. House. Republicans just gerrymandered the state to give themselves a 9-1 advantage in the upcoming midterms. This is your payback, bitch.

@schmidlein85 @JuddLegum What a brilliant well thought out rebuttal. Any thoughts about why a fund that was ostensibly created for Trump's presidential library was dissolved after $63M in settlements were wired into it? Where'd the money go?

@Nobodyspec4502 @JillFilipovic You could argue that it's unfair of her to equate the current Israeli government to Hamas, but that's essentially her argument. She does not single out the entire Jewish population of Israel in assigning blame. Is a harsh condemnation of Bibi an insult against all Israeli Jews?

@Nobodyspec4502 @JillFilipovic She wrote, "I am [snip] against the settlements, the occupation, and the brutalization of Palestinians". I think any reasonable interpretation would indicate she blames the Netanyahu regime, not all Israeli Jews in general. The words "Israeli Jews" appear nowhere in her tweets.

btw I am not "anti-Israel." I'm not an "anti-Zionist," depending on how we're defining the word Zionist (I am like many normie liberals against the settlements, the occupation, and the brutalization of Palestinians, but supportive of a democratic Jewish state). I am a boring-ass two state solution person who thinks both Israelis and Palestinians would be best served by each group coexisting in side-by-side countries. Palestinians are incredibly ill-served by the murderous tyrants of Hamas (to put it very mildly). But if you think Israel is being well-served by its current government... then yeah we very much disagree.

@Nobodyspec4502 @JillFilipovic Where exactly in her post did she "blame Jews"? She blamed some specific people who are Jewish (eg Netanyahu), but that's not the same thing as "blaming Jews" in general.

@JillFilipovic problem is you are still blaming Israel for "brutalizing" and you absolve Palestinians. They are "ill-served" by Hamas. So Palestinians are passive little puppies. The problem is you give no agency or blame to Palestinians, and yet blame Jews. (I'm not one BTW)

@sayl33056111 @ChrisCuomo Guarantee the story doesn't go to print without being cleared by an army of lawyers because The Atlantic knows that the Trump administration is litigious as hell. There will be no settlement, and if he doesn't drop the suit, he's going to be humiliated at trial. Bookmark this.
