I'm developing a bit of a contrarian view on pricing for AI startups
Hot take: seat-based in some cases is better than usage-based or "value based" (misnomer imo). For my new product I am considering charging a per-seat platform fee + offering AI at-cost.
- Doomer predictions of mass unemployment are probably overly pessimistic
- Unlike at-scale saas, startups can grow fast with seat-based pricing, even if white collar unemployment is more real than I anticipate
- You want your incentives aligned with customers. If customers want to lower their AI spend by using cheaper models or cutting certain workflows, it shouldn't hurt you.
- Buyers like predictable pricing and understand seat-based, it makes negotiation a lot simpler. You want to innovate on the minimum necessary set of attributes.
This doesn't work for product like Clay where a tiny % of the team will actually need to login.
But I think it would work well for Notion style products where it's widely used in an org.
Am I wrong?

This week, Anthropic delivered a master class in arrogance and betrayal as well as a textbook case of how not to do business with the United States Government or the Pentagon. Our position has never wavered and will never waver: the Department of War must have full, unrestricted access to Anthropic’s models for every LAWFUL purpose in defense of the Republic. Instead, @AnthropicAI and its CEO @DarioAmodei, have chosen duplicity. Cloaked in the sanctimonious rhetoric of “effective altruism,” they have attempted to strong-arm the United States military into submission - a cowardly act of corporate virtue-signaling that places Silicon Valley ideology above American lives. The Terms of Service of Anthropic’s defective altruism will never outweigh the safety, the readiness, or the lives of American troops on the battlefield. Their true objective is unmistakable: to seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military. That is unacceptable. As President Trump stated on Truth Social, the Commander-in-Chief and the American people alone will determine the destiny of our armed forces, not unelected tech executives. Anthropic’s stance is fundamentally incompatible with American principles. Their relationship with the United States Armed Forces and the Federal Government has therefore been permanently altered. In conjunction with the President's directive for the Federal Government to cease all use of Anthropic's technology, I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic. Anthropic will continue to provide the Department of War its services for a period of no more than six months to allow for a seamless transition to a better and more patriotic service. America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech. This decision is final.

Now is the year of dogged pursuits
But Back in 2021 i thought my technical career was over. I had chronic hand pain in both my hands and could barely tie my shoes let alone use my phone or write code.
I spent a few years not thinking about what it mean for the value of my labor to go zero but to not being able to produce any labor at all…
I gave up bjj. Pottery. Tech. Etc.
Then, that one company that solved dota and hide and seek released chatgpt and whisper and all of a sudden with dictation and some determination I could write essays, build things, and make a living from twitter meeting great people like @eugeneyalt @dmdohan @humford @GEVS94 for my reintegration into the tech world after so many years away.
From Canada advised companies for free until I had to ask them to pay me.
I charged companies until I figured out pricing and asked for enough that I became an investor as well.
I started a consulting business and a course business. Learning alongside @HamelHusain and @vig_xyz
But through that time I learned a lot about running a business and felt like I’d stopping learning about everything else.
I realized that last summer that I wanted to wrap things up and go somewhere and just get involved and be at the center of it all.

Parents are getting text from @NYCSchools in all different languages. I got texts in English and French. And emails in Bangla and Russian. Just got a text in Russian. This is ridiculous.
