Skating on the Rideau Canal was a yearly tradition long before the Rideau Canal Skateway was established. This is the story of skating on the Rideau Canal! The Rideau Canal was built by the Royal Engineers under the supervision of Lt. Col. John By. Bytown, which became Ottawa, was named for him. Work on the canal began in the autumn of 1826 and finished in the spring of 1832. The first full steamboat transit of the canal was by the Rideau, which sailed through on May 29, 1832. The length of the canal is 202 kilometres, with 47 locks. Today, the canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the best-preserved example of a slackwater canal in North America. Almost as soon as the canal opened, people were skating on it. Beginning in the 1920s, the Ottawa Dog Derby was first held, with dog sled races on the Rideau Canal. The Rideau Canal Skateway, the largest skating rink in the world, officially opened in 1971. In January 1971, a team of National Capital Commission employees went out onto the ice with brooms and shovels to create the rink. They cleared a small section between the Mackenzie King and Laurier bridges near the National Arts Centre. This section was then expanded as a six-metre-wide skating track on the ice going to Dows Lake. Lighting and music were added along the route of the rink. That first season, hundreds of thousands of people took to the ice on the canal. The first season of the skateway was also the longest in its history at 95 days. Typically, the average is 50 days. In 1980, the first Outdoor Curling Challenge was held on the canal. In 2004, it hosted Hockey Day in Canada, which included 100 simultaneous shinny hockey games on the ice. For Canada's 150th anniversary, 150 hockey games were held on the ice to celebrate Canada's birthday. Today, the Rideau Canal Skateway extends for 7.8 kilometres through the capital. In order to open for the year, the Skateway needs the ice to be 30 centimetres thick. To get to that point, 10 to 14 consecutive days of temperatures at -10C to -20C are needed. Skating typically runs from January to early-March. If you enjoy my Canadian history content, you can support my work with a donation at buymeacoffee.com/craigU

A lot of people don't realize just how close the last election was. The NDPs biggest issue from what I saw in Edmonton was spending time and resources repeatedly campaigning in areas they already had on lock. They showed up 4 times at my door and I had an NDP lawn sign...
Andrew Waller@01Waller

@North_Resists @gene_anderson So far but I just don’t see small town and rural AB ever changing their votes enough to give the NDP many more seats. For the NDP to win again, they have to get all of YYC, not just 3/5 of the seats.

Alberta's Chief Scientist has reviewed water quality monitoring results and has issued a statement making it clear that drinking water is safe. The Alberta NDP are guilty of spreading misinformation. If @RachelNotley had any decency, she would apologize to Albertans.

UCP MINISTER CLAIMS IT’S SAFE TO DRINK WATER LACED WITH ARSENIC, DISSOLVED METALS AND CARCINOGENS CALGARY – The Alberta NDP is demanding an apology and immediate action after UCP Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz stood in the Legislature Monday and vouched for the safety of water laced with arsenic and other contaminants following a leak from the Exxon-Imperial Kearl oil sands facility earlier this year. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, Alberta NDP Critic for Environment, Parks and Climate Resilience. “I assumed I must have misheard her but then I checked the records and there we have it — someone who claims to be the voice on Alberta’s environment claiming water laced with poison is safe to drink.” Schulz’s comments came during Question Period and specifically in response to questions from Calahoo Stonehouse about a series of illegal water releases, leaks and spills involving Kearl and the Suncor Fort Hills facility, both in northern Alberta. First Nations leaders in the area say they have never been consulted or informed about the incidents and fear long-term impacts to drinking water. Schulz said specifically, “I do want to point out, though, that during the NDP’s press conference today the member opposite did make numerous claims that arsenic, dissolved metals, and other carcinogens were at risk of causing danger to drinking water, wildlife, and people. Mr. Speaker, this is fearmongering and it is emphatically untrue. The drinking water does in fact remain safe.” It was public earlier this year that water containing dangerous levels of arsenic, dissolved metals and hydrocarbons had seeped from a Kearl tailings pond for more than a year into public lands and waterways. On Monday, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations Chief Allan Adam said his people fish in the impacted area and drink the water. According to the World Health Organization, “Long-term exposure to arsenic from drinking-water and food can cause cancer and skin lesions.” “We came forward with serious concerns on behalf of so many people and the Minister had nothing, except to downplay what are serious health risks,” Calahoo Stonehouse said. “These Ministers, the Alberta Energy Regulator — no one is listening.” The third and most recent incident involving Kearl was reported Nov. 13. It was reported that 670,000 litres of water was released from a settling pond at the facility into the Muskeg River and that water contained four times the legal limit of contaminants. Earlier this month, when asked about the incident in Question Period, UCP Energy Minister Brian Jean also downplayed concerns, saying it was “muddy water” and nothing more. “This is a disturbing pattern,” said Kathleen Ganley, Alberta NDP Energy & Climate Critic for Oil & Gas, Natural Gas, Minerals & Hydrogen. “Serious questions have been raised about the regulator and whether they are doing enough to protect people’s health. The AER is meant to protect the public interest, and there is increasing evidence they are not doing that. “The UCP have done nothing to restore confidence in the regulator, and to restore public confidence that anyone in government take protecting people’s health seriously. “The people at the top of the AER and the UCP Ministers have completely failed to maintain the public trust, they should resign and launch an immediate and transparent review of the regulator.”

It's time for Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau to really listen to what Canadians are saying... Paying 4x the price for electricity or suffering blackouts in the middle of the winter is NOT an option for our families and businesses. You can take action right now! Head to tellthefeds.ca and remind your Member of Parliament they work for you!

@andrew_leach Far as I know, you need to subscribe to Sportsnet. Compared to DAZN and Fubo, it’s a poor app. You only have day or two to watch the game as replay.
