I am considering a panel on Public Choice and International Trade for next year's Public Choice Society meeting in New Orleans. If you have a paper or idea that would be appropriate, let me know. I will reach out when we get closer to paper and panel submissions in September.

Talking about the "War" and its effect on the US economy can be tricky. And while everyone (including my AI generated cover art) focuses on the pump, the effects are much broader. Fortunately, I've put together some talking points that I'll be using and you can, too! substack.com/home/post/p-19…

At AIER, David Hebert responded without anger to my critique that he was too apologetic about trade with China. My view is that even if it's true that China's bad and has aims to invade the U.S., that's all the more reason to open up our ports 100% to Chinese goods. The open country always wins, and in all ways. Hebert largely agrees, which means my response to his critique is written with an eye on convincing him to think like me about currencies, IP, and the importance of ignoring so-called "trade deficits" altogether. realclearmarkets.com/articles/2026/…

.@johntamny is a serious thinker, so when he had some pushback on a piece of mine, I wanted to respond. I'm glad I did, both because it led to this piece but also because it led to a lovely email exchange between the two of us. Thanks for this opportunity, John! Almost everything we delineated in this statement has been vindicated by the failures of the Trump admin's tariff agenda in the last 11 months. anti-tariff.org

If tariffs truly created prosperity, countries that raise the most trade barriers would be the richest in the world. They aren’t. Yet protectionism keeps returning to Washington politics like a bad sequel nobody asked for. Why? The answer often has less to do with economics and more to do with political incentives. In Episode 189 of the Let People Prosper Show, I interview Dr. David Hebert (@Dave_Hebert), Senior Research Fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research (@aier) and Associate Director of the Entangled Political Economy Research Network, to unpack how political incentives shape economic outcomes. We discuss tariffs, immigration, manufacturing myths, and why criticism and debate are essential for a healthy democracy. If you want to understand why bad economic ideas survive even when evidence is clear, this conversation is for you.

@johntamny I'd be happy to send you a rebuttal/clarification on this if you'll run it on RCM. I can get it to you tonight if you like.

@Dave_Hebert Your piece sounds like an apology for trading with China. Why apologize? Trade not only lifts us, but it's the best, most peaceful foreign policy mankind has ever conceived. And then how did China "gain" from the accounting abstraction that is a "trade surplus"?
