So let me get this straight: Iran not only refuses further negotiations, it doesn't even bother to show up, is keeping the Strait of Hormuz blocked -- and Donald Trump, after all the bravado, threats of extermination, and chest-thumping, just extends the truce, does nothing, and waits for the regime to “submit their proposal”? If that’s not a humiliating fiasco and a display of complete weakness, I don’t know what is.

Nobody is disputing that Tehran wants the U.S. blockade in the Strait of Hormuz lifted. That’s an obvious point that needs no reminders. Whether you think it’s clever or not depends on what your definition of success is. If you’re primarily concerned with depriving the Iranians of money, then I suppose you could make that argument. But if the blockade is meant to coerce Iran into modifying its negotiating position, then “clever” is the wrong word. I still think the whole adventure is foolish. This entire war is foolish. U.S. policy is foolish. The Trump administration’s rationale for going to war was foolish. Leaving the JCPOA in 2018 was foolish. And believing the Iranians will capitulate to Trump’s demands is foolish. Never forget the big picture: the U.S. is trying to pressure a re-opening of a chokepoint that would still be open if it wasn’t for the war, while preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon it didn’t have.
laurence norman@laurnorman

The very fact Iran is so keen to have it dropped before talks suggests what is fairly clear now. The blockade was in fact a smart counter move. May not have been a game changer. Let others argue. But it wasn’t foolish.

@peterdaou Judaism is a religion, but Jewish identity is also ethnic and cultural. So “anti-Judaism” doesn’t fully capture hostility toward Jews as a people. “Antisemitism” refers to that broader form of prejudice.

The term "antisemitism" needs to be retired. It has become weaponized to the point of meaninglessness. The word "semite" is poorly defined, and the conflation with Zionism muddies things further. There's anti-Judaism, anti-Christianity, anti-Islam, etc. Do you agree?

According to retired CIA analyst Larry Johnson: During an emergency meeting On Saturday Trump tried to “use the nuclear codes” on Iran and he was stopped by General Dan Caine. According to Johnson “there is seriously something wrong with Trump”:

Can someone explain why the US was still enforcing the blockade during a period of formal ceasefire when Iran had publicly committed to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and allowing ships to sail through but the US insists on the blockade until a deal was finalized? Just because?

Holy shit, Iranians already seem to be directing ships to turn back from the Strait after the United States failed to drop the blockade. The Iranians expected the United States to drop the blockade, but Trump did not. What a mess.

@NajamAli2020 We literally countered their control of the strait with 3 days of a blockade. The thing about guaranteeing global free trade is that you de facto control global trade. I hope your just being partisan because you can't be this stupid to not understand this.

Opening the Strait of Hormuz is a short-term event. What the world has now clearly understood is this: Iran can open it, close it, and manage it at will. The leverage has shifted permanently. And the evidence? We have moved seamlessly from: “Open the Strait, you bastards” to “Thank you Iran for opening the Strait”
