President Trump is telling us exactly what he thinks about the midterms: he’s trying to get access to voter rolls, he wants to federalize elections, and he hasn’t ruled out ICE or the National Guard stationed at the polls. The only things that keep us safe in a democracy are free speech and fair elections.

Today, I voted against confirming Markwayne Mullin to be the next Secretary of Homeland Security. First, in both private and public, Senator Mullin has no plan for desperately-needed reforms of ICE. The American people — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike — have lost confidence in ICE after watching federal law enforcement kill American citizens in the streets with their own eyes. Second, the DHS Secretary plays a critical role in protecting America's elections. Senator Mullin is still unable to clearly state who won the 2020 election. And he has notably left the door open to illegally using federal law enforcement to intimidate Americans at the polls, if President Trump follows through on his stated threats. Michigan is a border state. We need a functioning DHS. And no matter who is in charge, I will work with them to deliver security to our state.
